Men’s Volleyball Drops Hard Fought Match to No. 2 Dominican

Record dips to 8-14

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team concluded its tough non-conference slate by battling No. 2 Dominican University on the road Tuesday, March 29. The Stars (20-1) swept the Green and White (8-14) in straight sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-15) at Igini Sports Forum in River Forest, Ill.

Sophomore Michael Eastman (Chicago, Ill.-Saint Ignatius) led the Titan offense with eight kills, while sophomore Julian Perez (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) and freshman Ryan Myers (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson) tallied four kills apiece.

Freshman Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) topped the team with 12 assists and sophomore Bradley Benson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont Township) assembled an 11 assist performance.

On the defensive side, freshman Luke Hartke (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) notched a team-high six digs.

The Stars welcomed advantages in kills (42-24), aces (4-1), blocks (5-4), assists (36-24), and hitting percentage (.507-.145).

The first half of the opening set saw back-and-forth action as no team held an advantage greater than three as the score sat at 13-10 in favor of DU. A Star service error, followed by an Eastman kill cut the deficit to 16-13 later in the set. However, with the Titans trailing 19-17, the Stars went on a set ending six point run to end the set by a final score of 25-17.

In the second frame, IWU went on a three-point run to trim the Dominican lead to 14-13 that saw a Hartke kill and back-to-back Green and White rejections. Another block by freshman Jake Kougan (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) and Eastman tied the set at 15-all. DU then went on a key four point run to open up a 19-15 cushion. The late deficit proved to be too much to overcome as the home team took the commanding 2-0 set lead after winning the second set 25-19.

DU jumped out to a 16-11 cushion at the mid-way point in the set. Dominican then earned nine of the next 13 points to take the set and the match by a score of 25-15.

The Titans will be rooting for Augustana as the Vikings need to defeat North Park University in their match tomorrow, March 30 for IWU to remain alive in CCIW playoff contention. The Green and White is set to finish up its 2022 regular season slate against NPU inside of the Shirk Center, Saturday, April 2. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and will be part of Titan athletics' support for St. Jude.
