Baseball Ends Florida Trip on High Note Against SUNY Canton

Team finishes 6-1 in the Sunshine State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team wrapped up its seven-game slate at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational by taking on SUNY Canton, Saturday March 19. The Green and White made quick work of the Roos, winning by a final score of 15-3, and improving to 8-6 on the year, while SUNY dropped to 2-11.

Sophomore Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) struck out the side in the top of the first to get things rolling early on for the Green and White.

Senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) led off the morning with another double to the right centerfield gap. With one away, junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) drove an offspeed offering to the right centerfield gap for a three-bagger, driving in Ranneklev for a quick 1-0 lead. Senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) brought home Ping, while reaching on a SUNY miscue, to increase the advantage to 2-0 after the opening frame.

The Titans continued their offensive rampage against the Roos by platting six more in the second with hits by freshman Keenan Burgos (Park Ridge, Ill.-Niles Notre Dame), Ranneklev, and senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin). Mutter produced a sacrifice fly RBI to drive in DiLello as IWU opened up a comfortable 8-0 after taking advantage of several SUNY fielding errors.

The Roos managed to close the deficit to 8-2 in the top of third, but the Titans generated three more runs in the bottom of the third to take the commanding 11-2 lead.

Cyrus got out of a bases loaded jam with one down in the fourth, inducing a weak fly ball, followed by a strikeout to keep the score at 11-2.

IWU generated four runs in the fifth to welcome a 15-3 cushion, making way for the bullpen to shut the door as the Green and White went on to win the contest 15-3.

Cyrus got the win, improving his record to 2-1 on the bump this season.

The Green and White will make the trek back to Illinois for its scheduled home opener, Saturday March 26 with a doubleheader against Wabash College. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Horenberger Field.
