Baseball Falls Short in Doubleheader at Wabash

Record slips to 8-8

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - After more than a week-long hiatus, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team took to the diamond against Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind. for a twin bill, March 27. IWU's bats went cold in the first game as the Titans could only muster two singles that lead to a 7-1 defeat. In the night cap, the IWU bullpen could not contain the Little Giants offense as Wabash won game two by a final score of 12-4. WC's record climbed to 12-2, while IWU's record dropped to 8-8.

Game one: Illinois Wesleyan 1, Wabash 7 (7 inn.)
After the Titan offense was set down in order in the top half of the first, the Little Giants offense sprung for three hits, while taking advantage of an IWU miscue, to claim a 3-0 advantage after the opening frame.

Wabash doubled their lead in the bottom of the third to open up a quick 6-0 cushion heading into the fourth inning as the Green and White offense was still in search of the teams first base knock of the game.

Freshman Josh Davis (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka) stranded the bases loaded on the bump to prevent further damage and to keep the Green and White's deficit at 7-0 going into the fifth.

Senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) notched the team's first hit of the day on a single to left field in the sixth inning. The next batter, junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) laced a single that drove in senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley), who earned a base on balls to lead off the inning as IWU cut into the Little Giants lead, 7-1, going into the home half of the sixth.

Wabash was able to close out the contest in the seventh inning to take the first game of the doubleheader by a final score of 7-1.

Senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) took the loss on the mound (2-1), tossing three innings of work.

The Little Giants outhit the Titans 11-2 and enjoyed two extra base hits, compared to the Green and White's zero.

Game two: Illinois Wesleyan 4, Wabash 12
After the intermission, the Little Giants offense picked up right where they left off in the first game by putting two runs on the board in the first inning by notching three hits on one IWU miscue to create a 2-0 first inning lead.

With the bases full of Titans in the third inning, senior Jared Mutter (Frankort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) hit a sharp ground ball to second base, allowing Ranneklev to scamper home as Mutter reached on the fielder's choice to cut the deficit in half, 2-1, after two and a half innings in the books.

Wabash reclaimed the two-run advantage, 3-1, as the night cap progressed into the fifth inning.

In the visiting half of the fifth, the Titans smoked back-to-back first pitch doubles to tie the ballgame. DiLello doubled to right center, scoring Ranneklev, who singled earlier in the inning. Ping then traded places with DiLello, while driving him in, to erase the deficit and to tie the game at three-all. The Titans bats were not done yet, as Mutter notched a perfectly placed ground ball up the middle, while adding to his team RBI lead, as Ping raced around the third base bag to beat the play at the plate to give the Green and White their first lead of the game, 4-3.

The Little Giants were able to scratch across the game-tying run in the fifth on an RBI single as the score stood at four apiece.

WC opened up the affair by scoring a combined eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings to enjoy a commanding 12-4 lead.

The score would end in a 12-4 victory for the Little Giants.

Wabash pieced together 14 hits, compared to IWU's eight. Ranneklev and DiLello tallied half of the hits for the Green and White, each notching a pair.

Junior Scott Monocchio (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) got the nod on the bump for the Titans. The Southpaw tossed five innings of work, allowing three earned runs, and did not factor into the decision.

Freshman Nate Carlson (Palatine, Ill.-St. Viator) recorded the loss (0-1) out of the bullpen.

The Green and White is scheduled for one last non-conference tune-up before College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action commences. IWU is set to host Knox College for a single, nine-inning affair Tuesday, March 29. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
