Baseball Wins Wild Affair Against Anderson

Titan offense notches 28 total hits

DAVENPORT, Fla. - Back for day four of the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team's spring break slate, the Green and White took on Anderson University, March 15, in Davenport, Fla. The four-plus hour ballgame saw multiple lead changes with early back-and-forth action, but ultimately IWU erupted for 13 runs over the final three innings to take the game, 25-13. Win the win, IWU boosted its record to 5-5, while AU's record slipped to 6-8.

An AU two-run homerun broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning to give Anderson an early 2-0 lead.

However, the lead was short lived as the Green and White created their first lead on four hits. Freshman Keenan Burgos (Park Ridge, Ill.-Niles Notre Dame) took an offering and drove his first collegiate homerun over the left center field fence to knot the score at 2-2 in the fourth. Freshman Matt Robertson (Libertyville, Ill-Libertyville) scored on the round tripper. Senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) took one for the team, earning a run batted in the hard way, as the senior got hit by a fastball, allowing freshman Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) to cross the plate and give the Titans their first lead of the ball game, 3-2.

The Ravens plated six runs on four hits in the fourth to open up a commanding 8-3 advantage.

IWU batted around in the fifth, springing for seven runs on seven hits to retake the lead, 10-8. The Titan bats manufactured three straight hits in the fifth that led to a Burgos single that allowed junior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) to cross the plate after his leadoff ground rule double. Freshman Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) registered his first collegiate RBI with a sacrifice fly that scored Robertson. Line drive triples by senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) and junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) tied the score at eight-all before a senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) double down the left field line allowed the Green and White to retake the lead, 9-8. A bases loaded walk allowed IWU to take a two-run lead, 10-8.

Anderson scored three runs on three hits to grab the lead again, 11-10, heading into the sixth.

The Green and White had plenty of opportunities to expand the lead as the team stranded the bases loaded three times through the first six innings.

The Titans managed to take a one run advantage, 12-11 after six and a half innings. After seven and a half, IWU pushed the lead to 15-11.

A Raven solo homerun closed the gap to 15-12 as the seventh inning stretch commenced.

IWU took advantage of two Anderson errors as the team generated six more runs in the eighth to open up a 21-12 cushion. The Green and White went on to win the marathon contest by a final score of 25-13.
Freshman Jay Lemenager (Clifton, Ill.-Clifton) got the win in relief (1-0).

The Titans will enjoy their last off day of the trip tomorrow, then the team will battle Ripon College, Thursday, March 18, with a 1:15 p.m. ET first pitch. The game is scheduled to be played at Northeast Regional Park, field 1.
