Monocchio Tosses Complete Game Gem as Baseball Blows by Ripon

Extends winning streak to five

DAVENPORT, Fla. - Behind the masterful complete game shutout from junior hurler Scott Monocchio (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West), the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team took down Ripon College, 9-0, at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport Thursday, March 17. With the win, the Green and White extended their winning streak to five games, while boosting their record to 6-5. With the setback, the Red Hawks record dipped to 3-5.

Monocchio tossed the first complete game of his career, doing so in shutout fashion to move to 2-0 on the bump this season. The junior scattered four hits over nine innings, while striking out 10 to lead the Titans to the victory.

The Titan offense wasted zero time getting on the board and proving Monocchio with run support. On the sixth pitch of the afternoon, a junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) ground-rule double down the right field line, plated seniors Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) and Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) to open up a quick 2-0 advantage in the opening frame. With runners on the corners and only one away, junior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) hit a fly ball to right, bringing home Ping as the Green and White scored three runs on three hits to lead 3-0 after one half inning.

Senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) continued his sensational campaign with a  single through the left side, driving in freshman Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) and Ranneklev to push the IWU advantage to 5-0 after one and a half.

In the top of the fifth, freshman Casey Swanson (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka) drilled a line drive double into the right centerfield gap, scoring Burgh, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, to increase the Titan lead to 6-0.

Monocchio was cruising on the mound for the Green and White through five innings as the southpaw limited the Red Hawks to just three hits while striking out five on just 60 pitches.

DiLello placed a ground ball right over the third base bag for a double, and advanced to third on a wild pitch with only one down. After a strikeout, Mutter found another barrell. This time, he laced a double to center field, driving in DiLello for a big two-out insurance run as the Titans lead grew to 7-0 through six and a half.

Ping once again added to the lead with a single up the middle, to score DiLello, who doubled down the left field line with two outs, increasing the score to 8-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

IWU tacked on another run in the eighth to polish off the 9-0 victory.

DiLello led the team with his three hits, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Ranneklev, Ping, Mutter, and senior Jack Schneider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) each notched a pair of hits, with Ping and Mutter recording three RBI.

Overall, the Titans outhit the Red Hawks, 15-6, including a 7-1 edge in extra base hits.

The Green and White will compete in the teams only twin bill of the trip, tomorrow, March 18, taking on Simpson College. The games will be played in Auburndale at the Lake Myrtle complex, field #4. First pitch of the double dip is set for 9:45 a.m. ET.
