Baseball Drops a Pair to Fontbonne

Team will play WashU March 4-5

CLAYTON, Mo. - With the schedule flipping to March, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team wasted no time getting back on the diamond to wrap-up its first road trip of the season. The Green and White battled Fontbonne University in a twin bill affair for a Tuesday matinee, March 1. The action started at 10 a.m. with the games being played at Shaw Park. IWU fell in walk-off fashion, 8-7, in game one. In game two, Illinois Wesleyan dropped a 5-0 decision. The Green and White's record sits at 0-4, while Fonbonne's record improved to 2-3 on the year.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 7, Fontbonne 8
With the quick turnaround, the Titans' got off to a favorable start by enjoying a 3-0 advantage after two frames. In the first inning, junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) laced a single to left field, bringing home senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) to make the score 1-0.

In the top half of the second, the bottom-half of the Green and White lineup saw success. Senior Jack Schneider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) barrelled up an offering from the Griffins' pitcher for a single to right field as junior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) crossed the plate for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Evan Hudson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) doubled to drive in Schneider to increase the Titan advantage, 3-0.

The Griffins' bats came alive in the home half of the third that started with a solo homerun to center field. Fontbonne was able to string together several hits to erase the quick deficit as the team scored four in the third to enjoy a 4-3 lead.

Fontbonne was able to generate another run in the fifth inning to increase the lead, 5-3.

With the bases full of Titans in the sixth inning, the offense failed to capitalize on two walks and a single as the deficit still stood at two runs, 5-3.

As IWU's backs were against the wall in the seventh, Hudson eyed up a fastball over the inner-half of the plate and did not miss his pitch. The sophomore picked a great time for his first collegiate round tripper as he clobbered a game-changing, two out, three-run home run over the left field fence to give the Titan's the lead back, 6-5.

The one-run lead was short lived as Fontbonne delivered the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder's choice to even the score at six all.

Senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) singled up the middle, bringing home fellow senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) who produced a lead off double, to retake the lead in the eighth, 7-6.

Fontbonne tied the game, 7-7, in the bottom of the eighth with a Titan balk.

Ultimately, the Green and White fell in walk-off fashion for the second time in less than 24 hours and Fontbonne pushed the game-winning run across the plate in the bottom of the ninth.

The southpaw, junior Scott Monocchio (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) took the hill for IWU. The Glen Ellyn, Ill. native went four innings in his 2022 season debut, allowing five hits and striking out five.

Freshman Nate Carlson (Palatine, Ill.-St. Viator) had a solid collegiate outing going four innings, giving up six hits, three runs, and striking out two. Freshman Lukas Wenz (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) (0-1) took the loss.

Hudson led the offense with a career-high four RBI's. Greer tacked on a team-high three hits. Schneider, Ping, Burgh, and Hudaon each produced two hits.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 0, Fontbonne 5
In the second game of the double dip, the Green and White only generated a total of four hits compared to Fontbonn's nine.

The Griffins scored four runs in the first three innings to take a commanding lead. The Titan's offense faced a dominant force on the mound, ending all hopes of a comeback.

Greer, sophomore Clay Goff (Warrenton, Va.-Fauqiuer), freshman Matt Robertson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville), and Ping were the four Titans to record a hit in the contest.

Freshman Morgan McFarlane (Chicago, Ill.-St. Laurence) got the nod on the bump, making his collegiate debut. The freshman tossed three innings of work, allowing four hits and striking out three.

The Green and While will lace up their cleats for a three-game series against Washington University in St. Louis, March 5-6. These two foes will play a doubleheader Saturday, March 5, with a noon first pitch and will wrap up the series on Sunday, March 6 for a single contest with a start time of 12 p.m.
