Baseball Earns Split Against WashU

Record sits at 1-5

St. Louis, Mo. - In Illinois Wesleyan University's baseball team's second road trip to St. Louis in as many weeks, the team earned its first win of the young season in game one, 8-6, of a twin bill against Washington University in St. Louis, Saturday, March 5. In game two, the Green and White could not complete the sweep, dropping a 21-3 contest. IWU's record stands at 1-5, while the Bears record moved to 1-4.

Game one: Illinois Wesleyan 8, WashU 6
Illinois Wesleyan led from start to finish. A solo round tripper from junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) got the scoring starting for the Green and White, 1-0.

The Bears answered right back in the second inning with a solo homer to knot the score at one all in the early going.

The Titans would score three times heading into the bottom half of the fifth. Ping doubled to center field, notching his second RBI in the game, to score senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) to up the score 2-1. Ranneklev then belted a two-run home run to the deepest part of the park to create a 4-1 advantage.

In the fifth, WashU capitalized with its second solo four bagger of the afternoon to reduce the deficit, 4-2. The Bears would tack on another run to make the score 4-3 at the mid-way mark in the contest.

Senior Jack Scheider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) singled to drive in fellow senior Dominic Dilello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) to expand the lead, 5-3, in the sixth.

However, WashU answered right back in the sixth to even the score at 5-5.

IWU scored three times in the seventh. Senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill-Lincoln-Way East) broke the tie as senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) scored. Also in the seventh, junior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) walked, earning an RBI. Following in Burgh's footsteps, Schneider also earned a base on balls, upping the advantage to 8-5.

The Bears tacked on one run in the eighth to make the score 8-6.

In the end, the Titans would earn their first win of the season, holding off a powerful WashU team to win 8-6.

Senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) (1-0) earned the win on the bump, tossing five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five.

Freshman Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.-Sherrard) picked up his first collegiate save throwing a clean ninth inning while striking out one.

IWU out hit WashU, 8-7 in the contest. Ping and Dilello earned half of the team's hits, each notching two.

Game two: Illinois Wesleyan 3, WashU 21
The Green and White welcomed a quick 1-0 in the first as Dilello singled, driving in Greer.

However, the lead was short lived as WashU raced out to a furious 10-1 lead after two innings.

In the end, IWU fell short, dropping game two by a final score of 21-3.

The Bears recorded 20 hits, compared to the Titans seven.
