Leritz Lifts Men’s Hoops Past Millikin on Buzzer Beater

Titans to host Wheaton for Senior Day Saturday, Feb. 12, at 4 p.m.

DECATUR, Ill. - Junior Luke Yoder (Normal, Ill.-Central Catholic) found senior Matthew Leritz (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis University HS) for the game-winning bucket to lift the Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team over Millikin University, 51-49, at the buzzer Wednesday night, Feb. 9, at the Griswold Center. IWU moves to 18-4, 11-2 in conference play with the win, while MU dropped to 12-10 and 7-6 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

A 9-2 Millikin run over a three-minute span tied the game at 49 all with 48 seconds to go in regulation. The Big Blue had the ball with 11 seconds, but a monster block by Leritz and a trio of offensive rebounds set the stage for IWU's late game heroics. After a timeout by Ron Rose, Yoder fed Leritz on the inbounds and the senior forward took it from there. Rising up over three defenders, Leritz banked a shot in off the glass at the buzzer to secure the win for the Green and White.

Leritz led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including three triples, while also pulling in a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Huntley) came off the bench to score 10 points. Yoder added seven points and eight rebounds.

A defensive battle saw the Titans hold a 36.1 field goal percentage to the Big Blue's 31.1 clip. IWU finished 5-for-15 from distance and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. MU went 5-for-23 from beyond the arc and 6-for-7 at the line.

IWU held a 7-5 edge in points off turnovers, an 8-0 lead in second chance points, and dominated the paint, 34-20. Millikin finished with a 17-14 lead in bench points.

Illinois Wesleyan returns home Saturday, Feb. 12, for a Senior Day clash with No. 13 Wheaton College. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. and will serve as the second leg of a double dip with the IWU women's basketball team. Senior day recognitions will take place at approximately 3:45 p.m.
