Fourth Quarter Push Not Enough as Women’s Hoops Falls at Millikin

Heller goes for 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists

DECATUR, Ill. - Early offensive woes plagued the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team at Millikin University Monday night, Feb. 7, as the Titans' fourth-quarter push fell short, 67-56. IWU dipped to 13-8 overall and 10-2 in conference play, while MU jumped to 17-4 on the year and 11-1 in league games.

The Titans trailed by as many as 23 in the contest, before putting together a late comeback effort over the final eight minutes and 42 seconds.

Trailing 53-31, freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) converted a fast break layup. IWU then made good on a pair of MU turnovers as senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) sank a triple with 7:43 to play. The three-ball by Lansford, Illinois Wesleyan's first of the game, was followed by another triple by freshman Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) on an assist from senior Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin)

Lansford capped the run with a jumper in the paint off another dish by Eck to pull IWU with 12 with 6:13 to go, before Millikin ended its three-minute scoring drought.

The Big Blue maintained their double digit lead until junior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) found freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) for a three in transition to trim MU's lead to nine, 63-54, with 1:05 on the clock.

IWU's comeback ended there however, as Millikin hit free throws down the stretch to send the Green and White home with a 67-56 defeat.

Lansford led the Titans with 16 points, while Heller finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Huber added 13 points, with Powers pulling in a team-best eight boards.

Illinois Wesleyan shook off a slow start to finish 22-for-55 from the floor (40 percent). Millikin converted 42.6 percent of its shots from the field, including 6-of-15 three-point tries. IWU finished 3-for-12 from the long line, with all three coming in the final eight minutes of regulation.

The Big Blue held a 39-31 rebounding lead, while each team finished with 21 turnovers. Millikin capitalized on Illinois Wesleyan's miscues to the tune of a 23-13 lead in points off turnovers. IWU tallied five blocks, led by Eck's three, to MU's six, while the Big Blue held a 9-5 lead in steals.

The Titans return to play Wednesday night, Feb. 9, as host to North Park University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Shirk Center.
