Women’s Hoops Tops NPU, Moves into Tie for First in CCIW

Five players score in double figures

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Five double-digit scorers led the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team to an 81-60 win over North Park University Wednesday night, Feb. 9, inside the Shirk Center. Illinois Wesleyan is now 14-8 overall, and moved into a tie for first in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin at 11-2. Meanwhile, North Park slipped to 14-7, 7-6 in the league.

Senior Kaia Bowen (Rantoul, Ill.-St. Thomas More) went for 15 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while corralling a team-high six rebounds. Fellow seniors Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) and Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) tallied 13 points each. Eck added five rebounds, five steals, and two assists, while Lansford tallied four assists and three steals.

Freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) hit three triples off the bench, while finishing with 12 points. Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) went 4-for-5 from the field with 10 points.

Illinois Wesleyan put together an impressive offensive performance, finishing 26-for-52 (50 percent) from the field, 8-for-15 (53.3 percent) from three, and 21-for-28 (75 percent) at the free throw line. NPU finished with field goal percentages of 42.6, 14.3, and 72.2, respectively.

IWU forced 29 turnovers, aided by 17 steals. The Titans turned the miscues in for a 31-27 edge in points off turnovers, while also owning a 16-4 lead in fast break points. The Green and White's bench outscored its counterparts 21-5, while the Vikings boasted a 38-32 advantage in points in the paint.

North Park came out firing on all cylinders, as the Vikings shot 58.3 percent from the field to the Titans' 33.3 clip to take a five point, 16-11, lead after one quarter.

IWU came back firing in the second period, hitting 8-of-13 shots from the field. Fueled by their seniors, the Titans quickly erased the deficit. Lansford's layup gave the Green and White a slim lead, before Eck found Bowen for a jumper in the paint. The bucket by Bowen pushed Illinois Wesleyan ahead, 19-16, and forced a NPU timeout at the 7:04 mark.

Eck capped the 10-0 Titan run with a pair of free throws to flip the script and give IWU a five point lead, 21-16.

An and-one by Huber around the 3:30 mark got the Green and White going on another big run to close out the half. On IWU's next possession, Huber hit Lansford for a kickback three-pointer. Huber came up with a steal on the defensive end moments later, and fed Eck for a transition layup to give Illinois Wesleyan it's largest lead of the game, 34-24, at the break.

The Titans blew the game open in the second half, going ahead by as many as 24. Freshman Abby Spencer (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) finished off the scoring with the first bucket of her IWU career as Illinois Wesleyan earned a 21-point victory.

IWU remains at the Shirk Center this weekend, Feb. 12, as the Titans host Wheaton College Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff. The game, which will serve as Illinois Wesleyan's Senior Day, will include a pregame ceremony recognizing Eck, Lansford, and Bowen.
