Lansford Lifts Women’s Hoops to 10th CCIW Win

IWU led by as many as 18

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A monster night by senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) fueled the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team past Carthage College, 58-52, Saturday evening, Feb. 5, in the team's annual Pink Zone game inside the Shirk Center. The Titans, who led by as many as 18 in the game, moved to 10-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and 13-7 overall. The Firebirds fell to 10-11 on the year and 5-8 in CCIW contests.

Lansford lit the Firebirds up for a career-high 32 points on 12-of-18 shooting, including six three-pointers. She also added two rebounds, a pair of assists, and two steals in the game.

Senior Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) and the freshmen duo of Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) and Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) hauled in seven rebounds apiece to tie for the game-high as Illinois Wesleyan finished with a 41-39 edge on the glass. The Green and White pulled in 16 offensive rebounds, leading to 10 second chance points.

The Titans finished the game 22-for-63 from the field (34.9 percent), 6-for-20 from three-point land, and 8-for-14 at the free throw line. Carthage did not fare much better, going 19-for-52 overall. The Firebirds hit six of 23 three-point attempts and went 8-for-16 in freebies.

Neither team had much offense in the early goings, but IWU broke through first as the Titans scored the game's first eight points. An and-one by Huber pushed the Titans ahead 11-2, before the Firebirds finished the period strong to trim the Illinois Wesleyan lead to 14-7.

Bowen opened the second quarter with a three-point play to give the Green and White a double-digit cushion, 17-7. Lansford then followed up her seven-point first quarter with 12 points over the last 7:34 minutes of the half, including a triple off a pass from junior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) with 3:33 left until halftime.

Huber wrapped up the first 20 minutes of play with a running hook shot to send IWU to the break with a 37-21 advantage.

Eck opened the third period with a jumper on a dish from Huber to give the Titans' their largest lead of the night, 39-21. The frame seemed to be low scoring for both teams as the Firebirds held a 12-7 upperhand in the period to cut IWU's lead to 11, 44-33, with 10 minutes to play.

Carthage carried momentum into the final stanza, as the Firebirds scored 11 straight points to knot the score at 44 all. Freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) ended the CC run with a pull-up jumper around the five-minute mark to reclaim the lead for Illinois Wesleyan, 46-44.

Lansford hit a jumper out of a timeout to extend the lead to four, but the Firebirds came right back with a triple to pull within one, 48-47, with 2:49 on the clock.

The hot-handed Lansford carried the Titans to victory from there, connecting on two more three-pointers, including one off a timely offensive rebound by Huber. Carthage banked in a three-ball late, but the two-minute surge by IWU was enough for the Green and White to escape with a 58-52 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan has a short turnaround as the Titans travel to Decatur, Ill. for a matchup with Millikin University Monday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Griswold Center.
