Baseball Swept by Greenville in Opening Day Doubleheader

Team will play Fontbonne tomorrow at 10 a.m.

O'FALLON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team opened its 2022 campaign on the road, in O'Fallon, Ill., against Greenville University for a doubleheader, Monday, Feb. 28. In the first game, Greenville walked-off the Titans, 8-7, with two outs in the seventh. The Green and White dropped a pitcher's duel in game two as GU won 2-1. IWU's record dipped to 0-2, while the Panthers record jumped to 2-3 on the young season.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 7, Greenville 8
The Green and White wasted no time getting things going offensively. Two walks and a sharp single by junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) through the right side loaded the bases in the first. Senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) sent a fastball on the outer half and barreled the pitch for a double down the left field line to clear the bases as the Titans raced out to an early 3-0 advantage in the opening frame.

The Panthers chipped away in the home half of the first with back-to-back two-out hits to cut into the Titan lead, 3-2.

In the top of the third inning, after a leadoff triple by senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua) that evaded a diving effort by the centerfielder, Ping was able to manufacture a sacrifice fly to up the score to 4-2, in favor of the Titans.

The Green and White tacked another run on in the visiting half of the fifth. After a leadoff double in the left center gap by Ranneklev, who advanced to third on a Greenville wild pitch got things moving in the right direction. Senior Dom DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) laced a line drive sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Ranneklev to up the lead to 5-2 for IWU.

Greenville managed to scrape across four runs with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth to turn the tide, taking the lead for the first time of the afternoon, 6-5.

However, the Titans' wasted no time erasing the deficit in the top half of the sixth. A Dillelo single through the right side, brought home senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill-Pleasant Plains) to even the score at six all. Mutter's bat continued to prove to be hot as he drove in his fourth of the contest with a single that scored Ranneklev to flip the script with IWU taking the lead right back, 7-6.

Ultimately, the Panthers scored two in the bottom half of the seventh inning to claim the victory in walk-off fashion, 8-7. The game ended with a walk-off walk with two out and a full count, as all of Greenville's runs came with two out.

Freshman Jay Lemenager (Clifton, Ill.-Clifton) (0-1) took the loss out of the bullpen for the Green and White. Senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) started the game on the bump for IWU. He went four innings, notching four strikeouts on five hits.

Mutter finished the game with three hits and four driven in. Ranneklev, Greer, and Dilello each accumulated two hits apiece.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 1, Greenville 2
In the night cap of the double dip, the first half proved to be a pitcher's duel.

Greenville was able to scratch across one run in the second and third innings to manufacture a 2-0 lead.

The Titans offense was able to muster one hit through the first four innings of action.

In the top half of the seventh, the Green and White offense showed some late life with a freshman Jack Schneider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) single to left field that brought home sophomore Nick Pratscher (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) to get the Titans within one as the score was set at 2-1. However, IWU could not capitalize with runners on first and second and no one out as the Titans grounded into a double play to thwart the threat. Greenville went on to win the close contest, 2-1.

The Green and White could only muster four hits in the game, compared to GU's seven.

On the mound, sophomore Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) took the loss tossing four innings of work, allowing just four hits and striking out seven.

The Titans will have a quick turnaround with playing another doubleheader against Fontbonne University, tomorrow, March 1 at Shaw Park in St. Louis. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
