Baseball Opens Season with a Four-Game Slate in St. Louis

Will play Feb. 28 and March 1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball squad is gearing up to start its 2022 campaign in St. Louis with a four-game slate, Feb. 28-March 1. The Titans will tangle with Greenville University in a doubleheader, Monday, Feb. 28 with game one starting at 12 p.m. The Green and White will then square off in a doubleheader against Fontbonne University, Tuesday, March 1 with first pitch set for 10 a.m. 

Monday's doubleheader will be played at Greenville in O'Fallon, Ill. at O'Fallon Family Sports Park. Tuesday's twin bill will be played at Fontbonne's home field, which is located at Shaw Park. For directions to Shaw Park, click here.  

The Green and White have battled with Fontbonne a total of 15 times. IWU is currently riding a three-game win streak, and has won seven of the last eight matchups. These two squads last met Feb. 28, 2020 in Imperial, Mo. with the Titans winning an 8-4, 10-inning affair. 

The story is fairly similar with Greenville. The teams have met 16 times with Illinois Wesleyan riding an eight-game win streak. In the mast meeting, March 2, 2021, the Titans won in convincing fashion, 11-0.

In the team's 2021 campaign, senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) led the Green and White with a .359 average, .871 OPS, 170 at-bats, 61 hits, 11 doubles, four triples, and 80 total bases. The senior notched a season high with five hits against Greenville, Feb. 26, 2021, along with four runs scored against Wartburg, March 13, 2021.

Additionally, senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) led the team with 40 runs scored, 20 walks, and a .434 on base percentage last season. Greer manufactured a .321 average in his 134 at-bats. The Springfield, Ill. native generated season highs of four hits against Wheaton, April 14, 2021 and three RBI's against North Park, April 2, 2021. 

In the pitching department, senior Evan Hill (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) is the team's leading returner with the most innings thrown in 2021. The senior tossed 31.1 innings of work, good for a 5.17 ERA and an even 2-2 record, including six starts. In total, Hill struck out opponents on 20 occasions with an opponents batting average of .299.
