Men’s Volleyball Defeated by Duhawks in CCIW Opener

Titans move to 5-6 overall

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team was defeated in straight sets by Loras College in its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener Tuesday night, Feb. 15, inside the Shirk Center. Illinois Wesleyan (5-6, 0-1 CCIW) fell to Loras (10-1, 1-0 CCIW) by set scores of 25-20, 25-14, and 25-16.

Sophomore Julian Perez (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) led the Titans with eight kills on a .400 attacking percentage, while freshman Luke Hartke (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) added seven kills on a .375 clip. Sophomore Bradley Benson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) notched a team-high 14 assists, while also finishing with a team-best eight digs.

It was the Duhawks' offense that proved too much for the Titans, as Loras hit .304 for the match to IWU's .068 clip. LC recorded 36 kills to Illinois Wesleyan's 26, while the Duhawks also held advantages in service aces (6-3), digs (34-26), and blocks (10-3).

A kill from Javier Romano (Prospect Heights, Ill.-Wheeling) evened the score at 15 apiece in the first set, before sophomore Michael Eastman's (Chicago, Ill.-Saint Ignatius) ace put IWU ahead 16-15. The Duhawks followed with a 6-1 run to take control 21-17, before holding off the Titans, 25-20.

Illinois Wesleyan fell behind quickly in the second set, and despite a late comeback push were bested 25-14 as Loras took a two-set lead in the match.

The Duhawks used a four-point run after a tool by Hartke to reclaim the lead in the third, 10-6, and force a Titan timeout. The Green and White rallied back to pull within two, 11-9, but Loras used another big run to complete the sweep, 25-16.

Illinois Wesleyan continues CCIW play Saturday, Feb. 15, at sixth-ranked North Central College. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
