Men’s Volleyball Drops Tough Battle at No. 6 NCC

Titans fall to 5-7 overall

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team traveled to take on No. 6 North Central College in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 19 at Gregory Arena. Service errors plagued the Titans (5-7, 0-2 CCIW), as the Cardinals (8-0, 2-0 CCIW) claimed the match in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-13).

Sophomore KJ Johnson (Saint John, Ind.-Marian Catholic) led the way offensively with his match-leading nine kills. Sophomore Michael Eastman (Chicago, Ill.-Saint Ignatius) tabbed eight, while fellow sophomore Julian Perez (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) notched seven kills.

Two Titans earned double-digit assist totals with freshman Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) accumulating a team-high 16. Sophomore Bradley Benson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont Township) produced 11 assists.

The Green and White saw advantages in kills (34-24) and assists (32-20), but could not overcome 17 service aces to NCC's eight. Meanwhile, the Cardinals enjoyed leads in aces (11-6), blocks (7-0), and hitting percentage (.392-.230). Both teams produced 18 digs.

In the opening set, NCC welcomed a quick 11-3 advantage. However, a six-point Titan run closed the early deficit to 13-10 in favor of the Cardinals. IWU later pulled within two, but the slow start proved too much to overcome for the Titans as the Cardinals claimed a 25-20 set one victory.

The Titans' first lead of the match came halfway through the second set, as IWU owned a slim 14-13 advantage. The Cardinals clawed back however, capitalizing on a few IWU miscues down the stretch to take the set, 25-19.

Illinois Wesleyan ran out of steam in the third, as the NCC offense found its stride to complete the sweep, 25-13.

The Titans will eye up their first conference win of the 2022 campaign as IWU will host Millikin University, Tuesday, Feb. 22 inside the Shirk Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
