Men’s Tennis Kicks Off Spring Season with Split

McCoy and Nair sweep singles matches

CLINTON, Iowa - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team returned to action with a split at River Cities Tennis Club in Clinton, Iowa Saturday, Feb. 12. IWU topped St. Ambrose University, 5-2, before falling to Wartburg College, 7-2.

Illinois Wesleyan used strong singles play to top St. Ambrose in the first match of the day. IWU picked up wins at No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 singles, while also taking 6-4 victories at No. 1 and 2 doubles. 

Senior Demetrios Triantafel (Indian Head Park, Ill.-LaGrange Lyons) and junior Carter Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal U High) notched a win at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) and senior Shanku Nair (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles against St. Ambrose. 

Triantafel earned a tie breaker win at No. 1 against St. Ambrose, while Burk took a tightly contested match at No. 2. McCoy dominated for a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, and Nai followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.

McCoy and Nair notched the Titans' two wins against Wartburg. McCoy came back from a 6-3 loss to take the next two sets 6-3 and 10-6. Nair completed the single day sweep at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

IWU heads to Indianapolis, Ind. Saturday, Feb. 26, to take on Cedarville University in a neutral site matchup.
