Titans Conclude 2022 Portion of the Season at Carthage Classic

Women placed fourth, men earned fifth

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University swimming and diving teams concluded the two-day Carthage Classic Saturday, Dec. 3. For the women, the Titans finished fourth out of the nine teams with a final tally of 1394, as the men clinched fifth out of eight squads with a total of 1026 points. 

Lake Forest women's team recorded first place with 2199 points, followed by Carthage (1992.50), and St. Norbet (1828.50), in second and third, respectively. Alma was behind the Titans in fifth with a final tally of 1139. Carthage's men's squad protected its house with a first-place team finish recording a total of 2477 points. St. Norbert (1915), Lake Forest (1590), and Alma (1096)  rounded out the top four in front of the Titans, as Olivet earned sixth with 817 points. 

During the morning session on the final day of the classic, the Titans stood out in the 400 yard individual medley. Junior Natalie Wajda (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) took home a second-place finish, recording a personal-best time of 4:48.12. Fellow Titan and senior Lauren Feddersen (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial) also placed within the top-three with a time of 4:48.91, good for third place. 

On the men's side and in the 400 yard IM, junior Lane Wagner (Danville, Ill.-Danville) notched third place, touching in a time of 4:19.73. In the 200 yard freestyle, sophomore Alex Kula (Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community) earned fourth place with a time of 1:47.23, a season-best for the Pekin, Ill. native. Junior Ethan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) also recorded a season-best time of 52.99 to notch a fifth-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly. 

To wrap up the morning session, sophomore Hadley Fudge (Stanford, Ill.-University), the Titans 100 yard breaststroke record holder, clocked in a third-place time of 1:08.94. 

In the evening session junior Bella Calcagno (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont Township) recorded a personal-best time of 2:19.57 in the 200 yard butterfly to beat out her previous untapered time of 2:24.66 set last season, Jan. 29 against Franklin.

Also on the women's side, Wajda earned her second, second-place ranking of the day in the 200 yard backstroke. She touched in at 2:11.83 while Fudge recorded a time of 2:12.70 for fourth place in the 200 back. Feddersen touched in a season-best 2:31.75 time in the 200 yard breaststroke, good for fourth. 

Illinois Wesleyan now enjoys an extended time off before returning to competition next month. The Titans will take part in their annual winter training trip down in Florida later this month.
