Women’s Soccer Draws in Senior Day Contest with Carroll

Titans embark on a five-game road trip

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team finished its fifth College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match with a 1-1 draw against Carroll University, Saturday, Oct. 8. The Titans record moved to 6-1-3 and 4-0-1 in the league as the Pioneers moved to 8-2-3 and 2-0-2 in the CCIW.

IWU outshoot the Pioneers 18-16 (11-7 shots on goal). Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) picked up five saves in the draw as the Carroll keeper blocked 10.

Around the 12:40 minute mark it was Carroll that opened the scoring to take the early 1-0 lead. The deficit marked the first time IWU has been behind since the Titans faced Wartburg College Sept. 10.

Senior Jenna Li (Haslet, Mich.-Lansing Christian School), commemorated her senior day match and kept the Titans in the game to secure the equalizer around the 26th minute mark. Tied at one-all, both teams saw chances but could not earn the decision making shot to end the half tied.

In the second 45, senior Lauren Shanks (Bloominton, Ill.-Central Catholic) made multiple breaks down the line but was stopped by the Pioneer defense and goaltender. At the 60 minute mark, Shanks beat five Pioneers but was halted by the Carroll keeper, who ran out of her net and blocked the short-range shot.

The game stood still at 1-1 until the buzzer sounded after 90 minutes of play.

The Titans hit the road and close out the season with five-away matches. A break in CCIW play is on deck for IWU as the Titans travel to Whitewater, Wis. to face UW-Whitewater Tuesday,
Oct. 11. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kick off.
