Late Goal Dooms Titans in Loss at UW-Whitewater

Warhawks score game’s only goal in 86th minute

WHITEWATER, Wis. - A late goal proved to be the difference between the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tuesday night, Oct. 11, in non-conference action in Whitewater, Wis. The Warhawks (8-3-3) used an 86th-minute goal to down the Titans (6-2-3), 1-nil, at a cold and rainy Robert Fiskum Field.

UWW broke through in the 86th minute as the Warhawks gained possession around midfield and quickly attacked the IWU backline. UW-Whitewater played Allie Prigge out on the wing, who ultimately fired a shot inside the far post for the game-winner.

The Warhawk goal came after a flurry of chances by the Titans. After earning throw-in after throw-in down the sideline, IWU garnered a corner in the 64th minute. The service from the corner connected with senior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic), but her go-ahead attempt was saved to keep the game scoreless.

Ten minutes later, Illinois Wesleyan saw seniors Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) and Jenna Li (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Christian School) rip shots, but both soared off frame to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0 into the final few minutes.

Illinois Wesleyan tallied six shots in the match to UWW's four, with IWU also recording a 2-1 edge in shots on target. The Green and White earned four corners, while allowing three.

The Titans will turn their attention back to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play this weekend as the Green and White travel to Chicago for a clash with North Park University Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
