Win Streak Moves to Four as Women's Soccer Tops Vikings

Titans lead the CCIW with 4-0 standing

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team continued its shutout-streak with a 3-0 defeat over Augustana College Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Neis Field. The Titans secured their fourth straight conference win to push their record to 4-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and to 6-1-2 overall as the Vikings dipped to 6-4-2 and 1-1-1 in the league.

Senior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) put the Titans on the board and earned the game-winning goal before the Green and White's leading goal scorer, Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) scored back-to-back goals to cap off the scoring at three. Sophomore Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) and the IWU defense's streak moved to 531 minutes without letting up a goal.

Shanks got IWU off to the right start, as just a minute and 14 seconds into the game the Bloomington, Ill. native flew by the opposition from a Maggie Peters (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) pass. Down the line, Shanks split the Augie outside and center defenders and placed the ball hard into the back of the net. Shanks' goal marked the fastest goal the Titans have scored this season and the third goal of this campaign IWU has tallied within the first five minutes.

The score stood still at 1-0 for the remainder of the first half. The Green and White defense kept the Vikings from much action. Borg registered four saves in the first half, one of which she popped up to hit the crossbar as the Titans regained possession right after.

In the second 45, the Vikings saw a change of pace in the opening minutes, spending more time in the Titans' defending third. Augie manufactured a corner kick, two free kicks, and two shots all within the first five minutes of the second half. At the 51 minute mark, an IWU free kick at the center line shifted the energy. Senior Heather Dietrich (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo) fed fellow senior Madison Fischer (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) the ball, there the senior sent a cross into the box as Steffens finished the job and headed it into the net to take a 2-0 lead.

In the 61st minute, Steffens scored the Titans' third, her second of the game, and her 12th of the season. Senior Jenna Li (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Christian) fed Steffens the ball inside the 18-yard box, with a quick touch, the Normal, Ill. native blasted one into the back of the net, earning the 3-0 victory.

Borg finished off  the match with a total of five saves as the Titans capped the game with 21 shots (nine on goal) compared to Augie's seven shots (five on goal).

IWU returns to Neis Field Saturday, Oct. 8 as the Titans will celebrate senior day against Carroll University. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
