Men’s Soccer Stuns Augustana for First Conference Win

Hoare secured the game-winner with 13 seconds left

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team continued College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play by traveling to Rock Island, Ill. to tangle with Augustana College, Wednesday evening, Oct. 5 inside of Thorson-Lucken Field. With just 13 ticks remaining on the clock, senior Dane Hoare (Chicago, Ill.-Von Steuben) beat the keeper with a nifty shot to secure the 3-2 victory. With the win, IWU's record now sits at 4-5-2 (1-2 CCIW), while the Vikings' own a clip of 0-9-1 (0-3 CCIW).

Augie got on the board in the ninth minute as the home team earned a free kick. The ensuing service rattled around the 18-yard box and trickled to a Viking via a Titan clear attempt that led to a shot. The shot, from just beyond the 18-yard box, found the back of the net and AC jumped out to a quick 1-0 cushion.

The Titans first real opportunity came in the 11th minute. Junior Brody Seaton (Dunlap, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) found some open turf, made a move on a defender, and sent a bouncing shot that glanced off the right post to keep the score at 1-0.

The Green and White knotted the score at one apiece in the 21st minute. Junior Gavin Smith (Seattle, Wash.-Eastside Preparatory School) took a free kick from 40 yards out and played a beautiful ball into the box. Sophomore Justin Hart (Morton, Ill.-Morton) was on the receiving end of the opportunity and passed the free kick to junior Sasha Tylnyy (Wheeling, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) who headed in the equalizer that escaped the keeper. Smith and Hart were both credited with the helper as Tylnyy notched his fourth goal of the year.

Smith was just getting started. Just minutes after the Seattle, Wash. native set up the equalizer, as he received the ball on the right side of the pitch, settled, made a few nifty lateral shifts to defeat the Augie back line and raced into the 18-yard box. Smith unloaded on a low rocket to secure the go-ahead tally in the 25th minute of action to give IWU the lead, 2-1, en route to tying his season-high and career-high with three points.

In the 44th minute, Augie was inches from tying the score. A Viking shot hit the left post and dribbled harmlessly out of play for a corner chance.

The score remained in favor of the Titans, 2-1, as the match entered the halftime intermission. The Green and White generated seven first half shots (three on goal), compared to the Vikings three (two on goal).

After a back-and-forth first 20 minutes of the second half, Augustana net the equalizer in the 68th minute as the score stood at 2-2.

With just 13 seconds left in the match, Hoare stunned the Vikings with the go-ahead goal. After much of the action was in the Titans' end, a clear ball was sent down the pitch. Freshman Kalabi Kamau (Alpharetta, Ga.-Marist School) settled the ball to his boot, sent a rainbow of a touch pass that hit Hoare in stride. Hoare took one dribble and placed a crossbody shot from inside of the 18-yard box that soared over the outstretched reach of the keeper to shock the Vikings as Kamau earned a much deserving assist.

Augustana sent one last hope down the field on the ensuing kickoff, but to no avail as the Titans escaped Rock Island with a 3-2 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan outshot Augustana by a final mark of 13 (nine shots on goal) to 11 (five shots on goal).

Hoare led the team with three shots, while Smith, Seaton, and senior Dorian Lesiuk (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd) each accumulated a pair of shots in the contest.

Freshman Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) notched his fourth straight start between the posts for the Titans. The Cary Grove, Ill. native generated three saves on the evening and earned his first collegiate victory in the process.

The Green and White will look to the program's Senior Day against CCIW foe Carroll University. The match is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8, at Neis Field in Bloomington. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. and will serve as the backend of a doubleheader with the women's soccer program, who will also take on CU, with a start time of 1 p.m.
