ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Regular season play came to a close for the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer Tuesday, Oct. 25 against the University of Washington in St. Louis. IWU was edged, 3-2 by the Bears and ended its regular season with an overall record of 8-4-3 as WashU moved to 7-4-5.

Senior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) scored her ninth goal of the season and the first of the game. Around 10 minutes into the match, senior Madison Fischer (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) sent a long-range ball towards the top of the 17, where Shanks went one-on-one with the challenging Bears keeper. Shanks possessed the ball and with a quick touch around the goalie put the Titans up 1-0. Shortly after, WashU got itself back into the game and tied it up at 1-all.

Coming out of the half, a corner kick opportunity for WashU was enough to take the lead 2-1. Behind by one, and with  just over 20 minutes to go, a freekick was awarded to the Titans at the halfway line. The ball was sent in and after a team save by the Bears, Shanks found the ball to knock it in and tied the game back up, 2-2.

With just over 13 minutes remaining in the game, the Titans lost possession of the ball as the Bears maneuvered through the Titan defense and scored the game-winning goal. IWU could not find the equalizer and ended the match with a 3-2 loss.

IWU will embark on the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament as the number one seed, Wednesday, Nov. 2. As the top ranked team, the Green and White earned a bye into the semifinals and will host the winner of the quarterfinal match, between teams still to be determined, in Bloomington, Ill. for a 7 p.m. start.
