Women’s Soccer Edged by 88th Minute Goal by NCC

Titans complete its conference slate with a 6-1-1 record

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking match to No. 19 North Central College, 3-2 in the Titans' final College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular season contest, Saturday, Oct. 22. The Titans moved to an overall record of 8-3-3 and a final 6-1-1 record in the CCIW. The Cardinals moved to 11-1-4 overall and 4-0-3 in the conference with one last CCIW game to come for NCC.

The Titans and Cardinals saw a scoreless first half. NCC held the advantage in shots, 6-3 but only 1-0 for shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) made one save in the first 45 minutes of play to keep the nil-nil heading into the second half.

A game that saw five goals scored in the back end of the match was jump started by IWU's Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) just a minute and 18 seconds into the half. Matimore was set up by senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) who took the ball off a NCC defender to slide Matimore a ball across the 18-yard box. Matimore did her job and gave the Titans the first lead of the game 1-0.

Around the 62 minute mark, NCC was awarded a corner kick, which seemed to be the Titans downfall against the Cardinals as all three of the goals scored on IWU came during set piece attempts.

Tied 1-1, IWU kept its foot on the pedal and answered right back just three minutes later. Senior Jenna Li (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Christian) squared away the ball to beat the NCC keeper as fellow senior, Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) out on the wing, sent a ball in to the box where Li gained control a fired a shot to take back the lead, 2-1.

Another corner kick for the Cardinals at the 73rd minute mark was enough to tie the match up at two-all. The momentum on NCC's side kept them in the Titans' defending third as they outshot IWU, 17-5, in the second half. It was not until the 88-minute mark NCC was awarded another corner, one of eight total, that sealed the deal and gave NCC the 3-2 decision.

The Titans have one more match on its 2022 regular season schedule against non-conference opponent WashU in St. Louis, Mo. Tuesday, Oct. 25. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
