Men’s Soccer Falls to Wheaton

Will play Augie, Oct. 5

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team continued its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin slate by taking on Wheaton College, Saturday, Oct. 1 at Neis Field in Bloomington. The Thunder tallied two first-half goals to seal the 2-1 victory. With the setback, the Green and White's record slipped to 3-5-2 (0-2 CCIW), while WC's record climbed to 4-3-2 (1-0 CCIW).

Wheaton broke the scoreless tie in the 14th minute to snag the early, 1-0 cushion.

With just 35 ticks remaining in the first period, Wheaton manufactured the game-winner to claim the 2-0 advantage.

The Thunder's back line thwarted every opportunity that the Green and White could muster, limiting IWU to a single shot all half. Wheaton outshot the Titans 19-1 in the opening 45 as the visitors clung to a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Midway through the second half, the Titans cracked the scoreboard on a nifty helper by sophomore Trey Bixby (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) that found the chest of junior Gavin Smith (Seattle, Wash.-Eastside Preparatory School). Smith settled the ball to his boot, swung around a defender, and used his left foot to send a ball past the keeper that found the bottom right portion of the nylon to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Green and White made several late pushes into the Wheaton zone, but to no avail as the Thunder escaped Neis with the 2-1 CCIW victory.

In the end, WC tallied 22 shots (11 on frame), while IWU manufactured six shots (two on goal). Wheaton held the slim, 3-2, advantage in corner opportunities.

Freshman Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) played all 90 minutes in net for IWU. The Cary Grove, Ill. native accumulated nine saves.

Senior Dane Hoare (Chicago, Ill.-Von Steuben) earned three shots, while Smith dialed up a pair, and junior Brody Seaton (Dunlap, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) tallied one shot.

The Green and White will travel to Rock Island, Ill. to continue CCIW action against Augustana College. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5 with a 7:30 p.m. first kick inside of Thorson-Lucken Field.
