Freshmen Trio Fuels Women’s Hoops Past Big Blue

Titans sit atop CCIW standings at 7-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball never trailed in a 73-51 rout of Millikin University Wednesday night, Jan. 19, inside the Shirk Center. With the win, IWU sits in first-place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin standings at 7-0, while the Titans are 10-6 overall. Millikin saw it's 10-game win streak snapped as the Big Blue stumbled to 13-4 overall and 7-1 in the CCIW.

Illinois Wesleyan was fueled by the freshmen trio of Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva), Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East), and Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy). Palmer tied for the game-high with 20 points, while also adding three assists and two steals. Huber posted a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Powers added 12 points. Senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) added 12 points and a season-high seven assists.

The Titans dominant effort led to a 42-35 rebounding advantage, as well as leads in assists (15-10), steals (11-4), points off turnovers (31-5), points in the paint (28-20), second chance points (15-3), and bench points (26-17).

IWU shot 37.7 percent from the floor, converting 26-of-69 shots, and went 8-for-23 in three-point tries. The Green and White were efficient at the free throw line, going 13-for-16, while Millikin went 8-for-12. The Big Blue finished 19-for-49 (38.8 percent) from the field and 5-for-14 from distance.

The Titans held the Big Blue scoreless for the first four and a half minutes of the second quarter, before closing the period with a four-point spurt by Huber to charge ahead 37-19.

Leading heavily at the start of the second half, the Green and White expanded on their advantage as Huber's swipe and score put the home team up 23 with 6:43 to play and forced a Millikin timeout.

The Big Blue trimmed the lead to as few as 16, but Palmer's three-pointer got the Titans back on track.

Holding a 58-39 advantage with 10 minutes to go, Illinois Wesleyan coasted to a 73-51 victory.

The Titans eye their eighth straight conference win Saturday, Jan. 22, when IWU travels to Carroll University for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
