Offense Fades as Women’s Hoops Falls at Carroll

Titans drop first CCIW game of the season

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team saw its perfect College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin record come to a halt Saturday, Jan. 22, at Van Male Fieldhouse. The Titans (10-7, 7-1 CCIW) were overrun by the Pioneers, 70-48, dropping IWU's record to 10-7 overall and 7-1 in league play. Meanwhile, Carroll boosted its record to 12-3 on the year and 4-3 in the CCIW.

Freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) paced IWU with 14 points, including three triples. Junior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) added seven points and a team-high four steals, while senior Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) notched team-highs in rebounds (7) and assists (5).

Despite shooting 58.3 percent from the floor in the first quarter, IWU finished 17-of-58 (29.3 percent) from the floor for the contest, while CU converted 29-of-64 shot attempts (45.3 percent). The Titans went 6-for-26 from beyond the arc, with four of the six triples coming in the first period. The Pioneers finished 6-for-19 from three-point range.

CU outrebounded IWU by a 42 to 34 tally, and built a 14-6 edge in second chance points. The Pios also registered advantages in points in the paint (40-18), points off turnovers (25-11), and bench points (33-25). The Titans held a slim 11-8 lead in steals, and edged the Pioneers in blocks, 4-3.

Carroll came out of the gates strong, scoring the game's first six points before a Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) triple cut the deficit in half, 6-3. The three-ball proved to kick start a run for the Titans, as Eck converted two from the free throw line and Powers knocked down another trey to even the score at eight around the 6:30 mark.

Offensive rebounds and second chance opportunities kept the Pioneers within striking distance, but three-pointers by senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) and Palmer pushed IWU ahead. Heller followed with a steal on a Carroll baseline drive and raced the length of the court for a lay-in to put Illinois Wesleyan up 23-15 after the first period.

The second quarter was all Carroll as the home team outscored IWU, 28-8, over the 10-minute span. Turnovers by the Titans combined with CU offensive rebounds and strong three-point shooting made way for a 17-0 run by Carroll. A Palmer second chance jumper ended a five-minute scoring drought for the Green and White, but the Pioneers tacked on another bucket to take a 43-31 lead into halftime.

Carroll continued to play with momentum in the third, upping its advantage to as many as 19. IWU's defense tightened up late in the period, limiting CU to just three points over the final five minutes.

Trailing 56-42 into the final stanza, the Titans struggled to find any source of offense as the Green and White scored its first bucket of the period on a pull-up jumper by freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) with 5:43 left to play. IWU finished with just six points in the quarter, as CU sent the Titans home with a 70-48 setback.

Illinois Wesleyan looks to bounce back Monday night, Jan. 24, when the Titans travel to Chicago for a battle with North Park University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside NPU's Gymnasium.
