Women’s Hoops Dismantles Augie for Sixth Straight CCIW Win

Titans move to 6-0 in league play

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team flew by Augustana College, 81-48, Saturday afternoon, Jan. 15, inside the Shirk Center. IWU is now 6-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and 9-6 overall, while Augie dipped to 7-7 and 1-4 in the CCIW.

Illinois Wesleyan was led by a trio of double-digit scorers. Senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) recorded a game-high 18 points, with freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) adding 12 points and eight rebounds. Coming off the bench, freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) scored 16 points and notched four steals, while senior Kaia Bowen (Rantoul, Ill.-St. Thomas More) added six points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Green and White flustered the Vikings to the tune of 26 turnovers, which IWU reaped 35 points from. Meanwhile, the Titans registered 14 steals led by Bowen and Palmer with four apiece. IWU, which was out-rebounded 45 to 41, recorded seven blocks, with senior Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) tallying three.

As a team the Titans converted 40 percent (28-of-70) shots, 39.1 percent of their three-point tries (9-for-23), and went 16-for-26 at the free throw line. The Vikings finished 17-for-54 (31.5 percent) from the field, 4-for-24 from distance (16.7 percent), and 10-for-14 at the line.

A three-pointer by Palmer gave Illinois Wesleyan a 7-2 edge at the first media timeout. Junior Katelyn Heller's (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) layup off a Bowen steal pushed IWU ahead by 12 after 10 minutes.

The Titans broke the game open in the second period, as one of Lansford's three triples gave the home team a 61-33 advantage.

IWU continued to overpower Augie from that point on, leading by as many as 37, before the buzzer sounded on an 81-48 victory.

The win sets up the Titans for a meeting with Millikin University Wednesday night, Jan. 19, at the Shirk Center. Tipoff of the battle between the first-place CCIW teams is set for 7 p.m.
