Men’s Swimming Falls to Wabash in Dual Meet

McCauley and Wagner led the Titans with two wins apiece

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's swimming and diving team was bested by Wabash College in a dual meet Friday, Jan. 14. The Titans scored 75 points, compared to the Little Giants' 143. The Titans were led by senior Mason McCauley (Deerfield, Ill.-Deerfield) and sophomore transfer Lane Wagner (Danville, Ill.-Danville) who tallied IWU's only first-place finishes of the evening with two apiece. 

McCauley, who swam two events during the dual, swam top times in each event. A powerhouse distance swimmer, the senior touched in at 9:53.60 in the 1000 yard freestyle, a season best. In the 200 yard butterfly, the Deerfield, Ill. native also took home a first-place finish with a time of 1:59.81. 

Wagner won the 200 yard individual medley, recording a season-best time of 2:03.35, almost four seconds faster than his previous best of 2:06.23. The Danville, Ill. native also secured the Green and White's fourth first-place finish of the dual in the 200 yard backstroke, touching in at 2:00.70. 

Sophomore Henry Moore (Champaign, Ill.-Centennial) and freshman Alex Kula (Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community) picked up second and third place, respectively, in the 500 yard freestyle. Moore touched in at 5:01.62 as Kula followed behind with a time of 5:03.93, both season best times for the two Titans. Kula's time also marked a new career best for the Pekin, Ill. native.

Sophomore Donald Tichy (Chicago, Ill.-Chicago HS for Agricultural Science) was the sole representative for the Green and White in the 200 yard breaststroke, where he grabbed a second-place finish. Tichy touched in at 2:26.69, a season-best, beating out his previous time of 2:30.00. 

Wrapping up the individual top-two finishes for the Titans was sophomore Ethan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community). The Bloomington, Ill. native earned a second-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle recording a time of 22.45.

IWU is back in the pool for another dual meet with Millikin University next Friday, Jan. 21. Both the men and women teams will compete in Decatur, Ill. next Friday at 6 p.m.
