Women’s Hoops Overpowers Elmhurst

Lansford scores game-high 20 points

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team overpowered a short-handed Elmhurst University squad, 85-59, Monday night, Jan. 10, at R.A. Faganel Hall. With the win, IWU moves to 8-6 overall and 5-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. EU, which only had eight players dressed for the game, stumbled to 2-11 (0-5 CCIW).

Senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, highlighted by a 4-of-6 effort from three-point range. She also was credited with game-highs of five assists and five steals.

Freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) tallied 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) registered 13 points and freshman Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) added 12.

The Titans shot 40.5 percent from the field, converting on 34-of-84 shot attempts. IWU hit a season-high 11 three-pointers, shooting 36.7 percent from beyond the arc, and went 6-for-7 at the free throw line. The Bluejays finished 21-for-48 from the field, 7-of-16 from three-point distance, and 10-of-20 at the free throw line.

The Green and White created a 45-36 rebounding advantage, including 22 offensive rebounds. Illinois Wesleyan's bench scored 30 points to Elmhurst's 18, while the Titans also held leads in points off turnovers (32-10), second chance points (19-2), points in the paint (32-26), blocks (4-0), and steals (19-3).

Strong three-point shooting paired with IWU's signature run-and-jump press kept the Bluejays in check. The Titans connected on seven first-half three-pointers, spread among five players, to break the game open. Powers knocked down three triples, while Lansford, Huber, Palmer, and junior Emily Collins (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Hersey) hit one apiece.

Defensively, Illinois Wesleyan turned 21 Elmhurst turnovers into 22 points. The Green and White also used 11 offensive rebounds to manufacture 15 points en route to a 55-28 lead at the midpoint.

IWU never looked back from there, leading by as many as 39, as the Titans ran away with an 85-59 win.

Illinois Wesleyan closes out its roadtrip Wednesday, Jan. 12, at North Park University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
