Women’s Volleyball Outlasts North Park on the Road

Titans up their record to 2-1 in league play

CHICAGO - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team grinded out a tumultuous five-set affair at North Park University in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play Wednesday night, Sept. 29. The Titans (8-9, 2-1 CCIW) came back to take down the Vikings (11-4, 0-3 CCIW), 3-2.

Illinois Wesleyan claimed the opening set, 25-21, before North Park rallied to take the next two sets. The Vikings bested IWU in a tight second set, 26-24, before NPU took the third 25-13.

On the brink of defeat, Illinois Wesleyan trailed 18-16 late in the fourth before rattling off three straight points. Senior Madi Corey (Frankort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) set junior Evy Makris (Orland Park, Ill.-Sandburg) for the kill and freshman Ava Porada (Frankort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) connected with senior Jessica McCall (Wayne, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis) to tie the score at 18 all. After North Park evened the set at 19, IWU capitalized on a few Viking errors and benefited from aces on serves from McCall and junior Grace Sanders (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) to take control, 24-19. The Vikings came roaring back, pushing the set to extra points, but back-to-back kills from Corey and a block by Sanders and senior Courtney McAuliffe (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) pushed the match to five sets.

The fifth set was all Green and White, as the Titans jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back to claim victory, 15-4. IWU was nearly unstoppable in the set, hitting at a .667 clip with 10 kills on 15 attempts, while the defense held NPU to a -0.045 clip in the set.

Illinois Wesleyan used a balanced attack to outlast North Park as four different players notched nine-or-more kills. McAuliffe led the way with 13 kills on a .379 attacking percentage, while McCall, Makris, and Dana Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) added nine apiece.

Corey, who tallied five kills on 11 attempts, recorded a 26-assist, 12-dig double-double in a stat-stuffing performance that also included four aces. Porada added 24 assists, five digs, an ace, and a kill.

Defensively, sophomore Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) registered a team-best 21 digs. McCall tallied 18 digs and four aces, while senior Amber Juarez (Bloomington, Ill.-University High) contributed nine.

IWU led in just about every statistical category including kills (58 to 53), digs (77 to 74), aces (12 to nine), and assists (53 to 48). The Titans also held a .160 to .154 edge in attacking percentage, while the Vikings edged IWU in blocks, 10-9.

CCIW play rolls on as the Titans travel to Decatur, Ill. for a clash with 20th-ranked Millikin University Friday night, Oct. 1. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Griswold Center.
