Women’s Soccer Overpowers Elmhurst in 4-0 Win

Titans move to 2-0 in CCIW play

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team continued its perfect College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin start with a 4-0 win over Elmhurst University Wednesday, Sept. 29. The Titans moved to 3-5-1 (2-0 CCIW), while the Bluejays dropped to 2-5-0 (0-2 CCIW).

Titan goal-leader Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) kicked off the scoring for Wednesday's night match as part of a four-point effort. The senior was sent a through ball from fellow senior Rachel White (Naperville, Ill.- Waubonsie Valley) and capitalized to put the Titans up 1-0 18 minutes into the game.

The dangerous duo of Steffens and junior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) connected late in the first half to up the IWU, as Shanks scored with 10 minutes to go in the first half.

The Titans' offense forced Elmhurst goalkeeper MaKenzee Velcheck to make a total of seven saves alone in the first 45. With IWU controlling the tempo, Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) only needed to make one save in the period en route to her second career shutout. IWU outshot the Bluejays 9-1 in shots on target, ending the first half 2-0 Titans.

With a dangerous 2-0 lead to start the second half, Borg made an essential upper-90 save just four minutes in to keep the Bluejays scoreless.

Around the 67 minute mark, Steffens found freshman Maddy Koppe (Skokie, Ill.-Niles North) who ran into the Bluejays 18-yard box and added an insurance goal to give the Titans a 3-0 advantage. Koppe recorded her first career goal in the Green and White uniform as Steffens picked up her second assist of the night.

With under 10 minutes to go, senior Heather Dietrich (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo) capped the scoring.  Possessing the ball nearly parallel to the Bluejays goal line, Dietrich chipped one past the Elmhurst goalkeeper to take a 4-0 lead. Senior Angelina Kosmas (Palos Park, Ill.-A.A. Stagg) fed Dietrich the ball in the final goal of the night. Dietrich grabbed her first goal of the season, while Kosmas picked up her second assist of the year.

The Titans are back at home Sunday, Oct. 3 for a non-conference game against Concordia University Wisconsin. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
