Women’s Soccer Wins 4-3 to Finish Off Falcons in Overtime

Titans move to 4-5-1 overall

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team picked up a 4-3 overtime win against Concordia University Wisconsin Sunday, Oct. 3 at Neis Field. The Titans advanced to 4-5-1 on the year as the Green and White snapped the Falcons (7-2) six-match win streak.

IWU and CUW got off to a fast start as junior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) put one behind the Falcons goalie to take the 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the match. Senior defender Madison Fischer (Orland Park, Ill.- Carl Sandburg) captured her first-career assist as she launched Shanks the ball. Shortly after, CUW responded with a goal of its own to tie the game 1-1 with 41 minutes still remaining in the first half.

Around the 15 minute mark, the Falcons found momentum after their first goal as CUW tallied its second goal of the day, to take the 2-1 lead. A clear attempt from the Falcons 18-yard box found sophomore Anny Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) on the end of it who placed it into the back of CUW's net. The goal tied the game 2-2 with 25 minutes to go in the first period.

Senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) came up big for the Green and White to push IWU back ahead later in the half. Senior Erin Peck (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis) took the ball wide to beat a Falcon defender, before crossing the ball to find Heather Dietrich (Geneseo, Ill.- Geneseo) who kept the ball going, eventually finding Steffens at the end of it. The senior-trio capped the scoring in the first 45 to end the half 3-2 in favor of IWU.

On defense, sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Johnson (Frankfort, Ill.- Lincoln-Way East) made four saves in the first half as the Titan offense outshot the Falcons 12-6 (7-4 SOG).

The second half saw a tighter match between the two squads. IWU entered the second 45 up 3-2 as the weather forced a 30-minute lightning delay with 32 minutes to go in the game. After the all-clear, the teams returned to the field where CUW capitalized on a late minute opportunity. With the third-tie of the day the Titans and Falcons were knotted 3-3 and headed into overtime.

IWU outshot CUW 12-11 (8-7 SOG) in the second half. Johnson and the Falcons goalkeeper captured seven saves apiece.

Four minutes into overtime, freshman Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) recorded her first career game-winning goal off a rebound on a shot by Izzy Mitra to propel the Titans to the 4-3 extra time victory.

IWU heads back into a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game against Wheaton College next Saturday, Oct. 9. The game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
