Women’s Soccer Dropped 2-1 to Thunder

Titans bounce back for midweek matchup Oct. 13

WHEATON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team were edged 2-1 by College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's Wheaton College Saturday, Oct. 9. The Titans took its first conference loss as they moved to a 4-6-1 (2-1 CCIW) record, while Wheaton moved to 6-5-1 (4-0 CCIW) overall record.

IWU was taken back early as the Thunder opened the scoring three minutes into the game. With a 1-0 lead the Thunder continued to attack in the Titans defensive third. Around the four minute mark, Wheaton added on its second goal of the night to widen the gap 2-0. 

Senior goalkeeper Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way West) was between the posts for the Green and White. The senior picked up two saves in the first 45 as IWU was outshot 8-5 (4-1 SOG). The Titans were kept scoreless in the first 45 ending the half 2-0 for the Thunder. 

Down by two goals, the Titans entered the second half showing more urgency. IWU outshot the Thunder 9-4 in the second half alone. With more opportunities, senior Izzy Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) scored for the Green and White with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. Senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) fed Mitra the ball through the Thunder back line to close the gap 2-1. 

Time was the Titans downfall as IWU could not find the equalizer ending the game in favor of Wheaton, 2-1. 

IWU is back for a midweek matchup against North Central College Wednesday, Oct. 13. The Titans will travel to Naperville, Ill. for a 7 p.m. game.
