Men’s Soccer Rolls Past Monmouth

Titans pick up first win of the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team secured its first win of the season over Monmouth College 4-0 Tuesday, Sept. 28 at Neis Field. The Titans move to 1-5 on the year as the Fighting Scots drop to 0-6-2 this season.

Junior Dane Hoare (Chicago, Ill.-Von Steuben) picked up his first-career goal only a minute into the match. Sophomore Isaac Plagakis (Sycamore, Ill.-Sycamore) was deep in Monmouth's defending half only to find Hoare in the box to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

After a full line change for the Titans and with just 14 minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore Sasha Tylnyy (Wheeling, Ill.- Buffalo Grove) picked up his first goal of the season to double the lead. Fellow sophomore Ben Cortes (Gurnee, Ill.- Warren Township) grabbed his first-ever point as a Titan as he found Tylnyy on the end of it, ending the half 2-0 for IWU.

The Green and White outshot Monmouth 7-1 (4-1 SOG) in the first 45. Senior goalkeeper Brett Sprengel (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Barrington) stopped the lone Monmouth attempt in the period to keep the Fighting Scots scoreless in the first half.

Up with a 2-0 lead, senior Zack Kokes (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) got his head on the end of it off a two-man assisted corner kick. Hoare's cross was flicked on by senior Trevor Martin (San Diego, Calif.-St. Augustine) who directed to Kokes for the Titans' third goal of the evening.

Around the 79 minute mark, sophomore Gavin Smith (Seattle, Wash.-Eastside Preparatory School) added an insurance goal to seal the 4-0 victory. Freshman Justin Bruso (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) slid Smith the ball at the top of the 18 as both Titans picked up their first-career points and ended the game 4-0.

The Titans travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan for a non-conference game against Calvin University Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. ET.
