Men’s Soccer Blanked by No.3 Calvin

Titans back on the road for non-conference game Tuesday, Oct. 5

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team dropped 3-0 to No. 3 Calvin University Saturday, Oct. 2. The Titans are 1-6 overall as the Knights climbed to 7-2-2 on the year.

The Titans kept pace with the No. 3 Knights in the first 45. IWU and Calvin both had six shots in total and three shots on target. Despite the opportunities, around the 19 minute mark the Titans took a deficit of one after Calvin net its first goal, taking the 1-0 lead.

Senior Brett Sprengel (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Barrington) made two saves in the first half. The Hoffman Estates, Ill. native kept the Green and White to a one-goal difference to enter the second 45, 1-0 Calvin.

Down by one, the Titans felt the Knights offensive pressure in the second half. Calvin added an insurance goal off a penalty kick with around 25 minutes remaining in regular time.

IWU held off the Knights as they were outshot 10-2 (5-1 SOG) in the second 45 alone. As time counted down on the clock Calvin grabbed a last minute goal in the 88th minute to end the game 3-0.

Sprengel got his first full 90 minutes this season. The senior recorded a career-high five saves on eight shots on target.

The Titans travel to Jacksonville, Ill. for another non-conference game against Illinois College, Tuesday, Oct. 5.
