Women’s Soccer Ends No.9 Chicago’s Eight-Game Winning Streak With 2-2 Tie

Titans are back at home after a seven-game hiatus, Wednesday Sept. 29

CHICAGO - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team drew even with No. 9 University of Chicago, 2-2, Sunday, Sept. 26. The Titans moved to 2-5-1 on the year as they put an end to the Maroons' eight-game winning streak leaving them with an overall record of 8-0-1.

This is just the second time IWU and Chicago have tied in their all-time series, the last was during the 2003 season where the two teams also tied 2-2.

The Titans were led by senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) who played a part in both the Titans goals. The senior had one goal, one assist, and a team-high two shots on goal. Freshman Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) made a career-high eight saves on 10 shots faced.

Steffens assisted junior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.- Central Catholic) off a free kick 15 minutes into the game. Shanks crashed into the box to put her head on the end of it to take the 1-0 lead. Shanks' goal also marked the first goal against the Maroons this season who had outscored their opposition 8-0 coming into the match.

The Titans held off Chicago for the remainder of the first half as they were outshot 7-2 in the first 45. Borg made four saves to keep the Titans 1-0 lead intact at the end of the half.

IWU entered the second 45 with a 1-0 advantage before Chicgao's top-goal scorer Hannah Rittenhouse found the back of IWU's net with 20 minutes remaining. With the game tied at one, just three and a half minutes after Chicago's first goal, the Maroons Hannah Rittenhouse got her second of the day to take the lead 2-1.

The Titans continued to pressure to find that equalizer goal. It wasn't until IWU forced a Maroon handball in the box with 3:14 to go on the clock. Senior Steffens stepped up to the penalty spot and secured the Titans equalizer goal they were looking for, tying the game 2-2. With Steffens penalty kick the two teams headed into overtime.

The Green and White saw chances outshooting the Maroons 2-1 in the first OT, but neither team capitalized to send them into double overtime. The Titans were in their defending half in the second 10 where they kept two corner kick opportunities from ending the game. IWU and Chicago ran out the 110 minute clock to end Sunday's afternoon match in a 2-2 tie.

The Titans return home to Neis Field Wednesday, Sept. 29 after seven games on the road. IWU is scheduled to take on College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponent Elmhurst University for a 7 p.m. kick off.
