Women’s Soccer Opens CCIW Play with 5-0 Blanking of Vikings

Titans return to the pitch tomorrow, to face No.9/2 Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. - Five different Titans scored in the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team's  5-0 win over North Park University Saturday, Sept. 25 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener. The Titans are now 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the CCIW, while the Vikings dropped to 3-5-1 and 0-1 in the CCIW.

Senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) opened up the scoring for the Titans only a minute and a half into the game. Steffens found the back of the Vikings net off a Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.- Central Catholic ) cross to put the Titans up 1-0.

With an early lead IWU continued to press as senior Izzy Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) scored her first goal of the season and the Titans' second in the game to take a 2-0 advantage. Shanks picked up her second assist of the day on Mitra's goal.

The Titans found themselves with a freekick just outside the 18-yard box with around five and a half minutes to go in the first 45. Junior-transfer Jenna Li (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Christian School) stepped up to the plate to add an insurance goal for the Green and White scoring her first goal as a Titan. With 45 minutes played the Titans ended the half up 3-0.

IWU outshot the Vikings 17-2 (9-1 SOG) in the first half. The Titans kept the Vikings under control as freshman goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) only needed to make one save in the first 45.

Up with a three-goal lead, Shanks continued to be an offensive threat as she beat NPU's goalkeeper off a long ball in from junior Maggie Peters (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community). Peters picked up her first career-assist and helped widen the gap to 4-0 for the Titans.

Time ticked down on the clock with only four minutes remaining in the game, as sophomore-transfer Sarah Johnson (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) found freshman Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) who curved the ball in the back of the Vikings net. Both Johnson and Matimore picked up their first-ever points in the Green and White jersey and ended the game 5-0 for IWU.

In the second half alone, IWU outshot NPU 12-5 (4-1 SOG). Borg ended the game with a total of two saves and picked up her first-ever shutout.

The Titans return to the pitch tomorrow Sunday, Sept. 26 to take on No.9/2 University of Chicago for a 2 p.m. kick off.
