Women’s Soccer’s Comeback Thwarted in Extra Time

Titans start conference play next Saturday, Sept. 25

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team dropped to Loras College 3-2 in double-overtime play Saturday, Sept. 18. The Titans dropped to 1-5 as the Duhawks moved to 6-0-1.

The Titans and Duhawks saw a balanced first half. IWU had six shots to Loras' seven in the first 45, as both teams got off three shots on goal. Around the 30 minute mark, the Duhawks capitalized on a corner to take the first lead of the game 1-0.

Down by one, IWU saw a strong second 45. Senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) grabbed her second goal of the year and the equalizer for the Titans just six minutes in. Junior transfer Jenna Li (Haslett, Mich.-Lansing Christian School) fed Steffens the ball and got her first point as a Titan.

IWU found itself trailing 2-1 as the clock ticked down towards five minutes when freshman Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) found the back of the Duhawks net from a cross sent in by senior Rachel White (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley). Timerman tied the score at two and pushed the game into extra time.

During the first OT, IWU was in the Duhawks' half as the Titans outshot Loras 3-1. The Titans offense forced the Duhawks goalkeeper to make three saves. Freshman Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) saw a great chance in the box but just missed the net with 10 second remaining sending the game to a second overtime period.

The Titans opened the second OT defending a corner kick, which saw a Duhawk get on the back end of it for the game-winner.

The Titans travel to Chicago for its last two stops on their seven-game road trip Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 25-26. IWU will play its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game against North Park University Saturday, before facing the University of Chicago Sunday. Games are scheduled for 5 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
