Women’s Soccer Outlasts Simpson in Double Overtime

Shanks’ goal with 15.7 seconds to play wins it for IWU

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team fought to the last seconds in a 4-3 double overtime win over Simpson College Wednesday, Sept. 1 at Neis Field. The Titans moved to 1-0 in their first game under Head Coach Keri Sanchez, while the Storm fell 0-1 in the season opener.

The Titans saw four different players score with junior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.- Central Catholic) leading the Green and White with the golden-goal and two assists. Sophomore Anny Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community), senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community), and freshman Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) net one goal apiece. Steffens also saw an assist that gave Shanks the ball to secure the Titan win.

Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) and senior goalkeeper Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) split time for the Green and White with Borg earning the win in her collegiate debut.

Sophomore Anny Mitra opened up the scoring in the mid-afternoon match around the 25 minute mark. The Normal, Ill. native collected a ball from senior Angelina Kosmas (Palos Park, Ill.-A.A Stagg) and found the back of the net and put the Titans up, 1-nil. With under three minutes remaining in the first half the Storm capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity to tie the game 1-1 at half.

Right out of the break, Simpson found itself with a 2-1 lead after a quick goal opened up the second half. Timerman responded shortly after from a through ball by Shanks to keep IWU in the game and tied at two with over 42 minutes remaining in the second half.

In a transition play, senior Izzy Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) put the ball at Shanks' feet, allowing her to one-touch a cross into the box for Illinois Wesleyan's third goal of the game. Steffens headed the service into the back of the net to reclaim a 3-2 lead for the Titans.

Simpson responded with a goal in the 74th minute to even the score at three and send the game to extra time.

The Titans weathered a push by the Storm in the first extra period, with Borg notching two saves, to maintain the 3-3 deadlock through 100 minutes.

The teams traded chances in the second overtime before senior Steffens played Shanks for the game-winner with 15 seconds left to lift IWU to a 4-3 victory.

IWU travels to Lexington City, Va. for the Washington & Lee Invitational this weekend. The Titans are scheduled to play Bridgewater Saturday, Sept. 4 at 2:30 ET and Washington & Lee Sunday, Sept. 5 at 13 p.m. ET.
