Titans Take Down Thunder in CCIW Tournament Opener

IWU will face third-seeded Carthage Saturday, May 8, at 5 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team opened the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament with a 4-1 win over seventh-seeded Wheaton College Thursday evening, May 6. The second-seeded Titans moved to 25-14 on the year with the victory, while the Thunder went to 14-23.

The Titans three hits were spread evenly among sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood), freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis), and senior Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone). Moore went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Sherwin blasted her third homer of the season to finish 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Trammell rounded things out with a 1-for-2 performance, to go along with a run scored.

Sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) shouldered pitching duties for IWU. The sophomore hurler tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out five, en route to her 10th win of the season.

The sixth inning saw the Titans break the scoreless tie with four runs on two hits and an error. Trammell sent a single back up the middle to get things rolling and freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) followed with a walk. After a pitching change, Moore reached on an error and Trammell scored from second. With runners on second and third and one out, Sherwin belted a three-run homer over the center field fence to put IWU in front, 4-0.

The Thunder made things interesting in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. Wheaton plated a run on a RBI groundout, and then loaded the bases once more to bring the tying run to the plate. Up to the challenge, Grubczak induced a slow roller to third to finish off the 4-1 victory.

With the win, Illinois Wesleyan will take on Carthage in the final of three games at Inspiration Field Saturday, May 8. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. and will be preceded by elimination games between Elmhurst and North Park (12 p.m.) and Wheaton and the winner of the EU-NPU contest.
