Palczynski Breaks Single-Season Home Run Record as Titans Fly Past Firebirds

Palczynski hit her 14th homer of the season, breaking Sam Berghoff’s record

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) broke the school's single-season home run record as the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team overpowered third-seeded Carthage College, 4-1, at Inspiration Field Saturday, May 8.

Palczynski belted her 14th homer of the season, a solo missile to left field, to break the record previously held by Sam Berghoff in the bottom of the third.

Freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) clubbed a two-run shot, her fourth of the season, in the first inning as part of a 1-for-2 day. Sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) notched IWU's other RBI, as she went 2-for-4 at the plate. Also picking up multiple hits was senior Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone), who went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

In the circle, the Titans got a stellar performance from sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park). She went the complete game, allowing just six hits and one unearned run, while tallying six strikeouts. With the win, Grubczak upped her record to 11-4 on the season.

Illinois Wesleyan scored in each of the first three innings to claw its way past Carthage. Sherwin's two-run shot in the first got the Titans rolling, while a RBI single from Moore in the third increased the lead to 3-0 after two.

Palczynski powered the Green and White to a 4-0 lead with her record-setting round-tripper into the fourth.

Carthage scraped one across in the fifth on a pair of hits and an error, but Grubczak retired seven of the next eight batters she faced to fend off the Firebirds.

Illinois Wesleyan faces top-seeded Millikin University in the 13th game of the CCIW Tournament Friday, May 14, in Decatur, Ill. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
