Titans Downed by No. 5 DePauw

Titans begin CCIW Tournament play at home Thursday, May 6

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team hung tough in a doubleheader with No. 5 DePauw University, but fell 5-2 and 4-2 in a pair of non-conference bouts at DePauw Tigers Field. IWU dipped to 24-14 overall with the losses, while DU improved to 31-2 on the year.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 2, No. 5 DePauw 5
The Green and White outhit the Tigers, 8-7, in game one behind a balanced offensive performance that saw eight different players record a hit. Seniors Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) and Toni Tortorella (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) each registered a RBI, with Heraty going 1-for-4 with a double and Tortorella finishing 1-for-2.

Freshman Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) threw four innings in relief, allowing just two hits and one unearned run, while striking out one.

DePauw used a pair of solo home runs and a two-run single to get out to a 4-0 lead into the third, where Illinois Wesleyan got on the board.

Sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) led the inning off with a double down the left field line, and Heraty drove her home on a two-bagger to the left center gap. After junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) was intentionally walked, Tortorella singled up the middle to pull IWU within two, 4-2.

The Tigers responded with a sac fly to up the difference to three, 5-2. The Titans got baserunners in the fourth and fifth innings, but could not bring them around, falling 5-2.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 2, No. 5 DePauw 4
The offense slowed in game two, as the Titans mustered just three hits. Junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) clubbed a two-run homer in a 1-for-2 performance to pace IWU, while Heraty and Palczynski also notched one hit apiece.

The Green and White used a trio of hurlers in game two. Sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) got the start and tossed two scoreless, while Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) and Turner combined for the final four frames. Mardjetko was hit with the loss, while Turner closed out 1.2 scoreless innings.

Illinois Wesleyan's seventh-inning rally came up short in game two. DePauw's four-run fifth gave the Tigers a 4-0 edge with the Titans down to their final three outs.

Palczynski began the inning with a single to left field. Earl followed with a two-run homer to left center, cutting the DePauw lead in half, 4-2. Tortorella then battled in a seven-pitch at bat for a walk to bring the tying run to the plate with nobody out, but three straight strikeouts stalled the rally.

With the regular season in the rearview window, IWU sets its sights on the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament. The No. 2 seed Titans kickoff the tournament Thursday, May 6, at Inspiration Field with a game against seventh-seeded Wheaton at 5 p.m.
