Titans Suffer Setbacks Against Pioneers

Titans fall to 16-16 overall

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Carroll University Saturday, May 1, at Horenberger Field. The Titans were upended 17-13 in game one, and were handed a 7-2 defeat in the nightcap.

With the setbacks, IWU is even at 16-16 on the season with an 11-13 mark in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. Carroll improved to 18-16 overall and 12-14 in the league.

Game One: Carroll 17, Illinois Wesleyan 13
The Titans cranked out 15 hits in game one, with four players picking up multiple hits. Freshman Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while juniors Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) and Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) each went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Nick Pratscher (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) added a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored, while freshman Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) and junior Jack Schneider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) each drove in two.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Titans roared back with 12 runs over the next four innings to take a 12-1 lead into the sixth. 

Carroll responded with an 11-run sixth inning, before adding one in the seventh and four in the eighth.

IWU plated a run in the bottom of the eighth, but fell short, 17-13.

Game Two: Carroll 7, Illinois Wesleyan 2
Greer paced the Titans offense in game two, going 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot for the Green and White. IWU's other four hits were spread evenly.

Illinois Wesleyan used an eight-man rotation on the mound. Freshman Garrett Swingler (Normal, Ill.-Normal West), Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac), and Evan Hill (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) each tossed a scoreless frame, while Cyrus struck out four and allowed just one hit over two innings. 

Illinois Wesleyan travels to Augustana College for a single game Tuesday, May 4, in Rock Island, Ill. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
