Baseball Drops Heartbreaker at Augie

Titans led 8-5 into the bottom of the ninth

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University was upended by Augustana College 9-8 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play Tuesday night, May 4, at Brunner Field inside Swanson Stadium. A four-run ninth gave the Vikings the walk-off win and upped their record to 27-6 on the season and 19-6 in league play, while IWU dipped to 16-17 overall and 11-14 in the CCIW.

Illinois Wesleyan touched up the Augie pitching staff for 13 hits, and with the help of four errors manufactured eight runs. Seven different players picked up hits, while five notched multi-hit games. Junior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) cranked out a team-high three hits in a 3-for-4 effort, while Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Juniors Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) and Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) added two hits each, while Greer scored twice and DiLello crossed home three times. Rounding out the multi-hit showings was senior Dan Cerniglia (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South), who went 2-for-5.

Greer opened the game with a leadoff single, and junior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) and Mutter followed with back-to-back base knocks to put IWU up 1-0.

Augie responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, and added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 5-1 advantage into the sixth.

Another leadoff single, this time off the bat of DiLello got the Titans rolling in the top of the sixth. Cerniglia followed with a single to right, putting two on and forcing an Augustana pitching change. Mutter's sac fly scored DiLello and freshman Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) doubled to drive in two. Freshman Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) walked with two outs and Burgh ripped a RBI single to even the score at 5-5 through six and a half.

The Titans tacked on two more in the seventh, scoring on one hit and a pair of errors to reclaim the lead, 7-5. After DiLello was beamed, Cerniglia reached on an error to put two on for Greer with nobody out. A single by Greer loaded the bases and an errant throw scored two, breaking the tie.

Illinois Wesleyan added an insurance run in the ninth, but Augustana scored four on two hits in the bottom half of the inning to walk-off with the 9-8 win. The Vikings' two out rally began with a walk and was followed by a hit batter. After a single scored one, a walk and passed ball pulled Augie within one, 8-7. Augustana finished off the game on a two-run single to stun the Titans and even the season series at 2-2.

Illinois Wesleyan opens up a three-game set with league-leading North Central Friday, May 7, in Naperville, Ill. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. The series wraps up with a doubleheader in Bloomington, Ill. Saturday, May 8, beginning at 1 p.m.
