Softball Overpowers Thunder in CCIW Sweep

Palczynski ties single-game RBI record with seven in game one

WHEATON, Ill. - Junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) tied the single-game RBIs record and sophomore Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) threw a complete game to power the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team to a sweep at Wheaton College Friday, April 9. Illinois Wesleyan blasted Wheaton 13-3 in game one, before claiming a 3-0 shutout in game two.

The wins boosted the Titans' record to 12-8 overall, 9-5 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, while the Thunder dipped to 9-9, 6-6 CCIW. Illinois Wesleyan registered nine extra-base hits in the sweep, as IWU combined for 21 hits in the doubleheader sweep.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 13, Wheaton 3 (7 inn.)
The Titans racked up double-digit hits for the sixth time this season in game one, as IWU finished with 13 in the win. Palczynski led the Titans with a 3-for-4 effort, including a pair of homers, as well as three runs scored, and a program record-tying seven RBIs. Her seven driven in are tied with Kaity Crane for the most in IWU history, a record set by Crane against Millikin April 9, 2012.

Also finishing with multi-hit games were freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove), senior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville), and freshman Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West). Fontanetta went 2-for-5 with three runs scored, Heraty finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and Turner added a 2-for-3 showing.

Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) picked up the win in the circle, as the sophomore threw the final five innings, striking out three.

Each team plated a run in the first, leaving the score tied into the third inning. Junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) singled with one away, and moments later scored on Palczynski's two-run homer to left.

Wheaton got a run back in the bottom of the third, but Illinois Wesleyan maintained a 3-2 lead into the sixth.

Senior Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone) led things off with a single and took second on Grubczak's sacrifice bunt. Turner followed with a single, and sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) belted a two-run double to the left center gap to extend the lead to 5-2. Palczynski walked with two outs, and back-to-back two run knocks off the bats of Heraty and freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) broke the game open, 9-2.

The Titans piled it on in the seventh, adding four runs on two hits. After Grubczak walked and Fontanetta singled, Earl walked, loading the bases for Palczynski with two outs. With one swing of the bat, Palczynski pushed the IWU lead to double digits with her ninth home run of the season. Her grand slam to left upped the Titan advantage to 13-2.

Wheaton pushed one across on a RBI groundout, but Illinois Wesleyan ran away with the 13-3 win.

Game Two: Wheaton 0, Illinois Wesleyan 3
Mardjetko's complete game led the Titans to the win in game two. The sophomore hurler scattered seven hits over seven innings, striking out three, en route to her fourth win of the season.

Offensively, Fontanetta and Trammell each went 2-for-3 as IWU registered eight hits. Trammell added a pair of RBIs and a run scored, while Moore notched an RBI in a 1-for-4 showing. The Thunder steered clear of Palczynski in game two, as the Mt. Prospect, Ill. native drew three walks in three plate appearances.

Turner's leadoff single got things rolling for the Titans in the bottom of the second. With Turner on second after a sacrifice bunt, Trammell roped a RBI triple to right field. Moore followed with a run-scoring single to put Illinois Wesleyan in front, 2-0, into the third.

IWU added an insurance run on Trammell's RBI double in the sixth, and Mardjetko slammed the door with a 1-2-3 seventh to finish off the sweep.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action at home Sunday, April 11, when the Titans play host to Augustana College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Inspiration Field.
