Softball Grabs Two Wins Behind Grubczak's Strong Performances

Sophomore hurler picked up two wins, striking out 13

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Strong pitching and timely hitting paved the way for the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team's sweep of Carthage College Thursday evening, April 15, at Inspiration Field. The Titans blanked the Firebirds 2-0 in the opener and claimed the nightcap 3-1 to up their record to 14-8 overall and 11-5 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. Carthage fell to 10-8, 8-6 in the CCIW with the losses.

Game One: Carthage 0, Illinois Wesleyan 2
Sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) threw a complete game two-hit shutout, striking out eight, as she moved to 6-2 on the year.

Grubczak did not require much run production in the win, but smart baserunning by senior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) and a solo shot off the bat of sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) lifted the Titans to the win.

Moore led the Green and White with a 2-for-2 day, highlighted by her second homer of the season, while freshman Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal) notched IWU's other hit.

Hearty put the Titans on the board in the bottom of the second. After drawing a two-out walk, she went from first to third on Turner's single to left, before sliding home safely on a passed ball.

Moore doubled Illinois Wesleyan's advantage with a leadoff homerun in the third to put IWU up, 2-0.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Carthage 1
Grubczak returned to the circle in the nightcap, tossing another complete game. She struck out five and kept the Firebirds scoreless into the seventh, before Carthage broke up the shutout.

The Titans finished with six hits in game two, with Heraty leading the way with a 2-for-3 effort and two RBIs.

Heraty, who went 2-for-3 in the game, got the Titans on the board in the top of the first. Freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) opened the game with a single and freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) walked, before a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. With two on and two outs, Heraty smoked a two-run single to right to put IWU in front, 2-0.

The Titans tacked on another run in the fifth. After Moore singled with one away, Fontanetta ripped a double to the right center gap to extend the lead to 3-0.

Carthage strung together a few hits in the seventh to break up the shutout. With the winning run at the plate with two outs, Grubczak got a flyout to finish off the 3-1 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage square off again Saturday, April 17, in Kenosha, Wis. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
