Softball Splits with Augie

Palczynski belts seventh home run o the season

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team split a doubleheader in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play at Augustana College Tuesday, April 6. After falling 1-0 in game one, the Titans bounced back with a 7-2 win in the nightcap. With the split, IWU moved to 10-8 overall, 7-5 in league play, while Augie improved to 4-16 and 1-11 in the CCIW.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 0, Augustana 1
Sophomore Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) tossed six innings, yielding just one hit, and striking out four, but a pair of errors proved costly in the 1-0 loss.

Offensively, junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) and freshman Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) tallied a hit apiece, as IWU outhit Augie, 2-1.

A hit batter advanced to second on a single, before taking third on an errant throw. The Vikings took the decisive 1-0 lead on a RBI groundout in the next at bat.

Illinois Wesleyan put the leadoff aboard via a walk in the fifth. After a sac bunt moved the runner into scoring position, back-to-back groundouts thwarted the Titans' attempt for an equalizer.

Game Two: Augustana 2, Illinois Wesleyan 7
Illinois Wesleyan got its bats going in the second game, tying Augustana with seven hits. IWU's hits were spread among six players, with freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) leading the way with a 2-for-2 effort. Palczynski went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, including her team-leading seventh homer of the season.

Sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) tossed a complete game in the circle, scattering seven hits and striking out five. Grubczak was tagged for two runs, just one of which was earned.

IWU wasted no time taking control in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) ripped a two-out single, Palczynski parked her seven home run of the season over the left field fence.

The Titans added to their lead in the third, making the most of a leadoff single by sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood). Moore took two bases on a sacrifice bunt, to bring Earl to the plate with one out and a runner on third. Earl smacked a grounder to the right side to score Moore and up IWU's lead to 3-0.

Sherwin's RBI double scored senior Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) in the fourth to extend the advantage to 4-0.

Following a 1-2-3 inning from Grubczak, the Green and White added a bit more cushion with three runs on one hit and an error. Moore walked and freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) singled to put two on for Earl with nobody out. A sacrifice bunt attempt was mishandled, scoring Moore, before a pair of groundouts brought home two more to put the Titan lead at 7-0 into the sixth.

Augustana broke up the shutout with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh, but Illinois Wesleyan closed out a 7-2 victory.

The Titans remain on the road for a doubleheader at Wheaton College Saturday, April 10. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
