Offense Fuels Softball to Sweep of North Park

Sherwin went 7-for-7 with five RBIs on the day

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A walk-off win and a breakout offensive performance led the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team to a sweep of North Park University Saturday, April 3, at Inspiration Field. Freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis), who went 7-for-7 with five RBIs on the day, came through in the clutch with a walk-off triple to give IWU a 9-8 win in game one. The Titans' offense erupted for a 13-3 run-rule win in game two to move to 9-7 on the season and 6-4 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. North Park stumbled to 10-5 overall and 4-6 in the CCIW.

Game One: North Park 8, Illinois Wesleyan 9
Sherwin came through with the walk-off hit in a career-day, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Seniors Hannah Heraty (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) and Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone), who each launched solo homers, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI apiece. Sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) also went 2-for-4, adding two RBIs.

Sophomore Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) came away with the win in relief, tossing the final two innings. Sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) got the start and struck out five over five innings.

Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead with back-to-back jacks from Palczynski and Heraty in the bottom of the first.

A Moore RBI single and a solo homer by Trammell put the Titans on top 5-0 into the fourth, where Illinois Wesleyan tacked on two more. After ripping a RBI triple to center, Moore came home on a sacrifice fly by freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) to extend IWU's lead to 7-0.

North Park's bats got going in the fifth, as the Vikings plated six runs on four hits and a pair of walks. The Vikings led the inning off with back-to-back singles. A single down the right field line plated two, and a grand slam pulled NPU within one, 7-6.

The Vikings strung together a few hits in the sixth to score two more and take their first lead of the game, 8-7.

After Mardjetko sent NPU down in order, the Titans' turned to the heart of their lineup in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Heraty ripped a single to left field to bring Trammell to the plate. The senior shortstop laced a single to the left-center gap, putting two on for the hot-hitting Sherwin. The Plainfield, Ill. native blasted a triple to the fence in right center to walk-off with a 9-8 win.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 13, North Park 3 (5 inn.)
Illinois Wesleyan's bats stayed hot in the second game, as the Titans tallied 16 hits. Sherwin and Trammell each recorded three hits, with Fontanetta, junior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington), Palczynski, and freshman Hope Yeoman (Lafayette, Ind.-William Henry Harrison) adding two apiece. Palczynski registered a team-high four RBIs, while Sherwin drove in three.

In the circle, the Titans went with junior Madie Monk (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) for the first three innings and then Mardjetko and Grubczak combined for the final two. Monk struck out five, while Mardjetko and Grubczak each fanned two.

A dropped foul ball gave Sherwin new life in the top of the second with Trammell standing on second. Taking advantage of the extra opportunity, Sherwin smoked a single to left to put IWU in front, 1-0.

The Titans tacked on two more in the third, before exploding for nine runs on nine hits and an error in the fourth. Trammell opened the frame with a single, and after stealing second scored on Sherwin's double. Yeoman then sliced a run-scoring triple to right, and Earl doubled to push the Titan lead to 7-0.

North Park made a pitching change after Earl's extra-base hit, but it did little to quiet the Illinois Wesleyan's offense as Palczynski belted a three-run homer to right center. Back-to-back doubles by Trammell and Sherwin upped the IWU advantage to 12-0 through three and a half.

The Vikings pushed three across on four hits in the fourth, but Mardjetko notched a pair of strikeouts and a foul out to strand the bases loaded.

Following a RBI double from Heraty, Grubczak closed out the win with back-to-back Ks to wrap up the 13-3 win.

Illinois Wesleyan hits the road for a four-game stint, beginning with a doubleheader at Augustana College, April 6. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
