Softball Drops Pair to Cardinals

Titans host Millikin for Senior Day Friday, April 30

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to North Central College Tuesday evening, April 27, at Inspiration Field. IWU (21-11, 18-8 CCIW) fell to NCC (18-13, 14-11 CCIW) by scores of 9-2 and 4-0.

Game One: North Central 9, Illinois Wesleyan 2
The Green and White collected six hits in the game, led by freshman Kristina Sherwin's (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) 2-for-3 showing. Sherwin clubbed her second homer of the season, finishing with a RBI and a run scored to go along with a double.

Junior Madie Monk (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) allowed two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings in relief.

North Central plated seven runs over the first two innings as the Cardinals took game one 9-2. NCC scored three in the first and four in the second to take a 7-0 lead after one and a half.

Senior Hannah Heraty's (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) RBI single got the Titans on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, and IWU added another on Sherwin's solo homer to make it 7-2 into the fourth.

The Cardinals added a run in the fifth and sixth innings to hand the Titans a 9-2 setback.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 0, North Central 4
The Titans tallied four hits in the nightcap, spread evenly among four players, while the Cardinals finished with seven base knocks.

Sophomore Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park), who went 1-for-2 at the plate, tossed the complete game and struck out four.

North Central struck first in game two, pouncing on the Titans for two runs in the bottom of the first as a pair of walks came around to score.

Illinois Wesleyan's deficit doubled, as NCC plated runs in the third and sixth to go up 4-0.

Down to its final at bats, the Titans attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh. Grubczak started things off with a walk, and sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) followed with a double, but IWU's rally ran out of steam as Illinois Wesleyan fell 4-0.

Illinois Wesleyan closes out the home portion of its regular season Friday, April 30, against Millikin. First pitch of the double dip is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will also serve as IWU's Senior Day, where the Titans will recognize Hannah Heraty, Amanda Rogers, Toni Tortorella, and Lexy Trammell.
