Softball Splits on Senior Day

Titans bounce back to take game two 4-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team secured a split with Millikin University on Senior Day at Inspiration Field Friday, Apri 30. IWU's rally fell short 7-2 in game one before the Titans took game two 4-1 to move to 22-12 on the season and 19-9 in the conference. Millikin's record now sits at 25-11 and 22-8 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Game One: Millikin 7, Illinois Wesleyan 0
Freshman Kristina Sherwin (Plainfield, Ill.-St. Francis) picked up two of IWU's seven hits, as the freshman outfielder went 2-for-4 with a double. Junior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) also notched a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.

A cluster of a first inning allowed the Big Blue to take a 4-0 lead. Millikin manufactured its early lead on two hits, an error, and three stolen bases.

Illinois Wesleyan put runners aboard in its half of the first and second innings, but could not manufacture a run, leaving MU's four-run lead intact into the sixth.

The Big Blue used a two-run shot in the fifth, and a solo shot in the sixth to push ahead, 7-0.

Sherwin's leadoff double gave the Titans another scoring opportunity in the sixth. Palczynski singled to right to put runners on the corners, but back-to-back groundouts stalled the IWU rally.

Monk tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to bring the Titans to the plate. Freshman Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) ripped a two-out single off the pitcher, and sophomore Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) followed with her third homer of the season to put the Green and White on the board. The rally ended there, as IWU dropped game one 7-2.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 4, Millikin 1
Illinois Wesleyan's bats were popping in game two, as the Titans cranked out 10 hits to the Big Blue's six. Heraty led the way, going 3-for-3 with a RBI. Freshman Hope Yeoman (Lafayette, Ind.-William Henry Harrison) went 2-for-3 and picked up the first RBI of her career, while five other players notched hits.

Sophomore Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) threw a complete game, her third of the year, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out five.

After Mardjetko escaped the first and stranded the bases loaded, the Titans bats awakened in the top of the second. Senior Toni Tortorella (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) opened the inning with a single down the right field line, and an error by Millikin put runners on the corners with one out. Yeoman came through in the clutch, with a RBI single, and Heraty followed with a run-scoring double to put IWU up 2-0. Moore capped the inning with a hard hit back up the middle to extend Illinois Wesleyan's lead to 3-0 after one and a half.

The Green and White pushed its lead to 4-0 in the fifth, where Sherwin got things going with a leadoff single. After she took second on a wild pitch, senior Lexy Trammell (Peoria, Ill.-Limestone) ripped a double to center to bring her home.

After Millikin plated a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Big Blue appeared poised for more, but Mardjetko had other plans. With runners on first and second, Mardjetko induced a groundout to third, where Palczynski got the force out and fired to first for the inning-ending double play.

MU mounted a two-out rally in the seventh, before Mardjetko slammed the door with her fifth strikeout of the day to secure the 4-1 win.

Illinois Wesleyan closes out regular season CCIW play tomorrow, May 1, with a doubleheader at North Central College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
